Cheap trackday car to start with????

Would like to know what cheap trackday cars could be an option for a novice?

How much would it cost to get it up to spec and how much it costs to mod?

Pug 205 Gti, can be found reasonably cheap, strip out interior, do it yourself, couple of bucket seats = £150, harnesses £250 and a roll cage = £300 (?)
Strut brace = £80 (max), Sticky rubber £100ish (i think) per corner for some Avon ACB10's and maybe a smaller steering wheel = £80.

Oh and you can budget on whatever you like for some adjustable shocks.

Almost any Caterham...some can be found at a decent price these days. And you'll probably sell it on for not a lot less than you bought it for...

Cheap as chips to buy... easy to strip out, loads of cheap parts around (it's a Ford!) and the rear axle makes it entertaining...!

What about sprinting? Would the same kind of car be appropriate? What is the basic criteria needed to enter?

Anyone point me in the direction of a good website that would cover most of the points I need to know?

205GTi is a sound bet, 309GTi worth considering too - always tend to be cheaper for the same age/condition. Can probably make a bit of money back selling the interior bits if any of it is in good nick

However for sprinting/hillclimbing the cheapest and easiest way is usually to enter in a standard road car. The cheap and effective mods that would turn it into a trackday beastie would probably push you into one of the other classes where you'll be up against some pretty serious cars. Check the regs of the series though - just about anything will be eligible for one class or another.
