Grating sound under acceleration...

Have a really strange noise under acceleration, particularly in 2nd gear, that sounds like a 'rasping' or 'grating' sound. Sounds like it comes from under the gearstick (or at least the middle of the car), rather than under the engine or rear of the car.
Any ideas at all?

could be the baffles in the silencer box breaking down.
