Having recently purchased an 18 month old 997 S i am slightly concerned about a cloud of smoke out the back end on start up. It only happens when the car has been left for a couple of days or so in the garage. The car has done 15,000 miles and was bought from OPC. Having run a 944 s2 many moons ago this is my first 911 so any thoughts greatly received.

thanks
Ben

They will do that just check the oil level is correct and if you are concerned get the dealer to justify this to you.

Get them to start some of their cars up and see how much they smoke.

They get blue smoke if they sit for a while, allowing the small oil buildup in the rings to drain to the bottom (sides) of the cylinders. But it should just be a cloud and then no more. Porsche's with boxer engines have always put out some blue smoke on cold starts. Nothing to worry about, but keep an eye on your oil level, that is what you see up in smoke.

The sales rep warned me about this and indicated that it is normal, because of the flat six configuration when the engine shuts down a little bit of oil remain in the cylinders because it doesnt drain out like it does in your typical v-6 configuration and this is burnt off at start up.

Thanks guys you have given me reassurance. As you have described it is just one puff of smoke on start up. Oil consumtion over the last 1500 miles has been just under a litre which i understand is quite normal.

I ran a 997S as a daily runner for 20,000 miles which included one service. Got it on 7000 miles and gave it up at 28000 miles. I never put any oil in it.

Yep, standard flat six Porker stuff. Had it on two previous Boxsters and now on a 997S as well. No need to worry about, though

I'd agree with that, had 8 of them and they all did it, including brand new. GT2 smokes like a chimney at startup.

Dont want to worry you but my 997 has done 9,000 miles and has only used half a litre of oil from new?

Possibly valve guides.....if it's a heavy, blue puff that lingers in the air forever, i'd have it checked out.

Unlikely.... Porsche Boxer engines do smoke at start up from cold if they're left for a few days. As has been said, it's a characteristic of the horizontal cylinders. TADT to a greater or lesser degree S.
