Idle Idea For A Carrera RS
Discussion
While lying in bed last night, I was idly thinking about the car I'd like Porsche to build (even though I would not be able to afford it anyway) and came up with this.
As I say, it's just my thought but if anyone has anything similar, I'd like very much to hear of it.
Porsche 997 Carrera RS. Not the GT3 RS, but a cheaper and totally hardcore road and track 911 that costs less than the standard Carrera.
Start with a 997 Carrera and limit the colours to solids, i.e. red, black, white and yellow, no silver.
Strip out all of the interior niceties so that you end up building a 997 Carrera with the dashboard and nothing else, no door cards, no carpets, back seats, front seats etc.
The interior will be built with alcantara blanking plates where the niceties such as the PCM modules and sat nav would go so you end up with a dashboard that contains the dials, the heater vents, though with no air con behind them, the buttons for the fog lamps and the heated rear screen. In it shall be two airbags, the car's maximum.
The interior is lined with the kind of carpet that you get covering the wheel arches in the boot of a Mk 2 MX-5, that kind of thin, light, stiff hard-wearing stuff. The door cards are modelled on those of the 964 RS (no door handles, but with quarter lights, allowing the main rising glass to be square and so cheaper). Electrochromatic, power folding door mirrors are not an option. Fixed ones are all that's available.
Lightweight bucket seats can be an option but the Clubsport package is standard fitting with the high backed chairs and roll cage meaning no rear seats. No sound deadening.
No fancy options like covering the rear section of centre console with leather, it just comes painted the same as the car's exterior. You can't spec anything that the car doesn't have except bucket seats, racing harnesses and a fire extinguisher and perhaps lightweight wheels.
PASM is deleted – this is not a comfortable cruiser, it's a hardcore 911.
The next step is one that I'm certain people won't like. The 3.6 litre engine is ditched in favour of the 3.4 litre unit from the Cayman, with a new exhaust system, producing around 310 BHP. There are a number of reasons for this but mainly it's to avoid treading on the GT3's toes – the Carrera RS certainly will not be as fast.
The exterior is devoid of bodykit, partly for aesthetic reasons but also because it's cheaper and makes the car look less like the GT3 and more like the 964 RS. The electric rear spoiler of the standard 997 Carrera is retained but must be raised before venturing out on track.
Throw in some more focused tyres and voila, you have a light-weight, hardcore 911 for around £50,000.

I love it, but:
1. why re-engineer the windows? just keep the ones it has
2. i'd have to have air con
3. i'd want a proven engine, which means a 964-based bottom end like the 996 GT3/Turbo/GT2
I guess the lowest spec of that engine in water cooled form would be the Mk1 GT3 engine - but i'd be happy for them to detune it so it didn't tread on the new GT3's toes. How does 340bhp sound?
edit to add:
4. fog lights? heated rear screen?
5. i think it's more of a CS than an RS really... like the 968CS

I think it would be a '997 Club Sport' rather than an RS.
A more likely option would be a Cayman 'Club Sport' at £40k
But it's a good idea. Weight reduction benefits all the major dynamics - accelaration, braking, steering, handling.... it's remarkable how much nicer a simplified, de-specc'd 911 can feel.

It adds character and makes it look less like a standard Carrera.

Buy a 997 Carrera
. I know why you'd have air con but it adds complexity, wieght and cost. verysideways said:

It's a fair point but with a 3.6 litre it'd be too much like a 997 Carrera - this is the need to differentiate it totally.

For when it's foggy and rainy. Or both, obviously.

You're probably right

It sounds too much
