My 944 S2 needs some significant headwork doing, and as it's already got 224k on the clock I'm deliberating as to whether it's worth it. An alternative could be an engine transplant, and wondering whether a 968 lump would be a viable option. Does anyone have any experience of this? I read an article in 911 & Porsche World a little time back, but that was a major piece of work involving supercharging as well which is out of my league currently.

It's possible - on an S2 it's virtually a straight swap - there are quite a few 944's out there with 968 engines. Equally a rebuilt S2 engine shouldn't be that much. Either way - try EMC on 0121-328 2225 who know more than many about 944s

They are exactly the same aren't they? Different head I thought so a transplant would be V Easy. In my unmechanical head anyhow. Cousin has a 968CS and Ive got an S2 side by side you can't tell the difference under the hood.

If you want more power then I would have thought that the 968 lump makes sense but if its just a "new" engine then there are plenty around at places like PH Sportscars (Near Derby).

If you're considering swapping the engine, then you need to put a V8 in there. The LS1 fits IIRC. evil

it can be done but its more than just a "straight swap" the engine looms are very different on the cars and a PITA to sort out. And a 968 engine (if you can find one with a known history) is going to cost a shitlot more than it will to fix your S2 engine.

Must admit unless you come accros a real bargin it hardly seems worth it rfor the small increase in power - bear in mind few 968s ever make the 240 bhp. Mine was one the best outputs JZ had seen and was 228 I think.

The guy I bought my 944t off is working on a project to stat replacing 944 engines with small block V8s I think. Not sure about the handing but the power would v handy

Hmm. Loosing the brake booster means some strenghthening exercises for the lower leg may be in order. Looks pretty neat otherwise.

Looks to me like it's still in place on the top pic? (Well, the reservoir and cylinder seem to sit in the same place at any rate)

And even if it does, it's got to be worth it for that V8 soundtrack alone - there's no engine note that beats a chevy V8

Edited to add
I've just checked the site, and you're right, you have to loose the brake booster.... Surely some sort of remote servo could be constructed?
Or I could just say bollox to it and stop being such a wuss?

The concept of the melodious nature of a chevy V8, and the rather fast 924S that would be the result has crossed my mind , particularly as I alrady have KW Variant 3 suspension, and Wilwood brakes for track-work next year. As for being a wuss, well, the last car was a Cerbera, not known as the car of choice for the fairy-toes brigade.

But, to get slightly back on to the thread, a 968 with a Ninemeister supercharger may result in a car with a softer voice, but fewer compromises, if you see what I mean.

The work is in swapping the harness and ecu, you will also need the 968 Air Flow Meter or MAF. I would say you could probably do it for less if you count the cost of rebuilding the bottom end of you S2 engine which is probably not far off. You did email me about my 968 engine, but so far it looks like it is sold, but I should still have the harness, ecu and AFM for sale if you need them. You are not looking at huge gains in power but you will have a broader torque spread from the variocam, but with that comes the reliability issue due to the chain/ sprocket wear on the cams that operate with the variocam mechanism.

The wuss comment was aimed at my personal hesitation in going ahead with the transplant

You didn't say anything about superchargers! But if we're talking blowers, just imagine how much better and LS1 complete with Vortech kit would be (500 bhp anyone?)

Not remotely helpful, I know.

But sort of ontrack again - would a remote servo, or some alternate means of brake assist (perhaps a vacuum pump off a diesel? - IIRC PPC's Kevin did this on his V8 Capri) serve the purpose?

These here LS1's - do they fit RHD steering arrangements - or is it a LHD only?
