Hi All

I am considering having an Aluminum Nitrous tank built to put in my spare wheel hole in the back of my 928....to increase drastically the amount I can carry from 11 lbs to 82 lbs....

The tank would be roughly 17 inches across and 10 inches high....

It would have to withstand a pressure of around 2000 PSI...

Now....to do this I need to know the following...

How thick would the ally have to be to withstand that pressure in its weakest part....which I assume

would be 8 1/2 inches across the top....?????

Any answers appreciated

All the best Brett

Thats over 200 tonnes of force on the top face assuming it is barrel shaped! Rather you than me - there is a reason why divers bottles areshaped the way they are! If you are really serious you would have to get the shape "designed" using FEA but I really have serious doubts that it could be safely made to work. Sorry.

Richard.

If your're planning to make a rectangular tank then bending stress in the flat panels will be your problem, and the worst case will be the biggest panel - the sides (10 x 17) in this case. To keep the bending within tolerable limits those panels would need to be extremely stiff. If you can change the design to have a circular or oval cross section, the capacity will be smaller (roughly 3/4 of the enclosing rectangle) but the bending stress will be dramatically reduced.

I have no idea what pressure is used in LPG tanks, but you can get off-the-shelf items to fit a spare wheel hole, since that's the usual location for conversions.

In the 928 you can probably stack 2 of those

Hi a couple of things you should think about 1, where will the pick up be so you get nitrous all the time under full throttle the nitrous is going to run to the back, on corners its going to run to the sides, and 2, how are you going to warm the tank to the right temp and maintain the pressure hope this may be some help.Dan

Hi All

Thanks for the replies...

I am going to speak to a local Diving shop tomorrow as apparently diving bottles can take the 2000 plus PSI pressure I need

Looked into LPG tanks but only tested to 675 psi...so no good..

Bottle heating will be a problem but will work that out eventually

I really need a polo mint shaped tank....do divers use these does anyone know ??

All the best Brett

Hi brett only me again I supply & fit nos kits, refill bottles and I can see lots of problems ahead for you, with extra 82 pound of weight in the boot the power you gain will then be less bhp per ton, How are you going too weigh the tank to fill it empty to full and heat it to 1100psi, sorry to be a marter DAN sierra cosworth 470 bhp plus 200 shot of nos on a twin system 35pound of boost water/methanol water injection etc etc as seen at the pod.

Hi

Umm...my main problem is amount used......I "could" mount 4 bottles (11 lb) side by side across the back of my Porsche....see pic of one used now....

As I am aiming for 1000 hp within the next year...I dont think that one bottle will be enough... and as the spare wheel hole is already there....

All the best Brett

Hi brett only me, the nos system i use (Holly IN US) they do bottles 15lbs & 20lbs you could have 4 of them I run my car with 225 shot of nos and all it done was blew the engine up 3 times,(melting pistons not enough retard on the ignition) so i went down to 200shot and its all right now, I dont know how much you would like to run there is a limit, you will have to spend 1000s of pounds on the engine so it could run lots of nos Iam building a new engine for mine so i dont have to use as much nos as iam now,but still come out with about 750bhp in stead of my 650 at the moment, what are you using the car for. Only one problem! If he manages to beat me he's still got the Pheonix to beat! hehe
She's being finished off at the mo and will have 1000 RWHP with £0,000s spent on get it to with stand it all.

Anyways Brett whens the next trackday your doing? We can see whats what where it matters?

Craig.

Hi all

Not trying to beat Craig lol

Just would like to be most powerful Porsche in the UK....I think 1000 hp should accomplish that ...and if it beats Craig....so be it

Over the winter ,I will be fitting the new MAXX progressive controller (Wizards of Nos) and increasing my jetting to ...hmmm....as much as possible lol...300 by spring Id think...and once tested ...go up from there to around 500 plus hp jetting...

My main problem...which I imagine Craig has as well...is NOT power...its Traction...which is why I need the MAXX....launching at the moment involves going sideways trying to straighten up for the first 50 to hundred yards ...Not ideal for good times...

Next year.....assuming all goes well....I will be at first Pod day I can ....hopefully to take the UK 928 record...and possibly the Porsche record....and maybe more

Or maybe I will be rebuilding my engine if it goes pop

As I am not having much luck with round tanks...I will probably go with 4 x 11 lb bottles and distribution blocks etc...

All the best Brett
