Selling 996TT privately
Discussion
I hear what the other guys are saying , but the higher the price the harder it is to sell privately (PX, finance, etc)there is a world of test pilots, bargain hunters who "want to pay nothing," wrong uns who want to know where your car is & what security it has etc etc.
Amongst these there are good decent genuine enthusiasts who will pay fair money & earn you more than a trade deal, but how much more? I always sold privately until I tried to sell my first 3 year old 911, I had so many people wanting to talk silly deals without even looking at the car, speculative traders trying to steal it "do you need the money", other magazines & websites trying to get me to advertise the car with them, I decided never again! Of course I could have had a bad experience, but the irony is most of the people phoning were trying to offer me less than I could get from trading the car!
Let your fingers do the walking & phone around a host of OPCs & specialist to get a real idea of price for a no hassle cheque in hand risk free deal (I guess about £47k for a 28k 02 well specced 996TT, without any work required!), it could tempt you, if you are going to do the private thing use enthusiasts sites/magazines like Porsche Club Gb, Stuttgart 9's & Pistonheads & you may get £2-3k more tops.

Try and sell privately? Why not but be careful where you advertise. I used a selection of car websites including here and sold without any hassle to a fellow enthusiast who test drove the car, cost me zip and had the satisfaction of not lining an OPC pockets. I would much rather buy my next car privately for the same reason. Is your car an 02 or 52 plate? There again apparently I'm a test pilot chancer so what do I know!

I have just sold my Oct 55 C2S with 4500 on the clock. The car cost me £70k exactly a year ago. As a trade in for the new car the OPC were offering me less than £60k.
On the recommendation of a guy I know who lives in the village I contacted a broker. The deal was the broker guaranteed me that I would finish up with a net (after his fee) £4k more than the OPC. Also no sale no fee. He advertised it, took calls, filtered out time wasters etc all at his cost. I kept the car at home and continued to use it. He brought two people to see it. Neither asked to drive and one bought it. The money was in my account by CHAPS payment before the guy collected the car. I was so pleased with the deal I sent him away with a full tank of petrol! The broker's fee? £1000. All round it was a deal that worked for me.

I did the same with my GT3 when i sold that and got a few grand more for it through the broker, who managed to get an OPc to pay him more for it than they would me..On the recommendation of a guy I know who lives in the village I contacted a broker. The corollary is that when I told the OPC that there would be no trade in when I paid for the new car they sounded pleased despite having apparently lost out on a probable healthy profit on my C2S. Either they don't make as much margin as we tend to think; or they already have a sustantial inventory; or they are lazy s*ds who find it easier to sell new cars that have an 18 month waiting list.
I am trying the selling privately routeat the moment ( www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/103923.htm ). The car I am selling I puchased privately from Piston Heads at the beginning of the year. At the time the car seemed a bargain compared to similar cars being offered at OPCs. I think having a Porsche warranty helps as this is the same as an OPC would put on the car. As long as the relavent checks are made on the car I see no reason to buy from an OPC and pay their huge mark up.

Agree 100%. KTR - may I wish you the worst possible luck in selling. Hopefully you don't get a sniff until the new year when I will have funds to buy an example like that (shame not black and no PCM but I might have made an excpetion for that nice example)
