E36 SMG back to Manual ?
Discussion
I did accidentally come across such a conversation in one of the BMW forums very recently - it was a case of removing the hydraulic actuators, and replacing with a manual lever plus clutch pedal etc and some electrical work. However this was a google search & the forum was the sort you need to register for hence my sketchy details. I think the originator had the same opinion as yourself i.e. SMG is cheaper than non-SMG so take that option & bin the actuators=result. So hopefully this gives you confidence to search yourself and perhaps get a bargain!
Get in touch with www.fabdirect.com i was speaking to these guys at the end of last year and they seamed very knowlageable on this conversion. I'm sure they can point you in the right direction.

I remember seeing a previouys post saying fab knew nothing, but have since spoken to them, and they were helpfull
They do a "KIT" £2500 (wow) as long as you give them yer old bits back you get a £750 refund.
Basically kit is:
New 6 Speed Box
Peddle Box
Wireing Loom
EWS Kit (Single ecu for dual ecu)
6 Speed Gear knob and Gator
Clutch and Flywheel.
So the question still looms, is it a lot cheaper removing the smg unit from the gearbox, as if the wireling looms / ecus are differnet, that would prove tricky. All good fun.

sold the smg in the end. struggled to move it though, everyone is so scared of them, but it was relly good !!

Mine's still off the road, been just over a month now since i've seen it. The garage can't cure the problem i've got with this holding back on the gear change.
im all most to embarassed to say...............I bought a evo 6 ;o( and to be fair though it was fast, and handled it wasnt a pleasent experience, missed my rear action and long reliable rev ranges.
Only had her for 3 weeks, was offered a deal, and took a bmw 535I sport with full m5 kit, mouldings, mirrors bumpers etc.
Goes well, but purley a stop gap until i can afford a e46, after 6 e36s i think its time for a change, and after driving my friend low milage 53 place i must say hooked. ;0)
