Just bought a little mini, been after one for a while as first car for my GF, (and secretly toy for me!) just bought an M reg mayfair 1.3i, in black, its currently got flames up the side and skulls on it, but its getting a new front end as soon as I get it, then its going OE white with a black roof, Morris cooper badges, then need a set of S front brakes..................and the list goes on!

One big q is how good the single point injection is from a performance point of view?

Also is the an easy way around the 10" wheel problem yet on the front brakes?

I think injection is a bit limited on the tuning front, theres been a few articles in the mags about converting to carbs recently.

And, yep going for 10s still entails changing to S disks and calipers or suitable 4 pots, neither of which is cheap.

People fit honda or fiesta mk2 callipers. I run S disks myself. Buy them once!

Also, have a look at ditching the injection crap. Not sure if SPi's have S Sized valves.

They probably do. If they don't, the MG and VDP metro blocks tagged 12HF01 have big valved unleaded heads.

I'm a big advocate of having 2 engines, one being rebuilt whilst you wear out the other one. Thing is, I need to rebuild the engine which is in there.

Mmm nothings changed then since I was working on the little buggers last!

I think I will leave the injection on, the increase in reliability is worth it as its going to be my gf's car (yeah right).

Might have to leave the 12's on too as I can't be bothered to change the diff to bring the fd down so its not screaming at 70.

I am panicking however as I can't find my 1981 logbook and chassis plate which I wanted to put on so I could lose the side repeaters and the cat!

And its my intention to not have to have a spare engine for this one as I expect it to behave!

im sure i dont have to point out that putting a 1981 vin and logbook onto a 1995 car is illegal....

...never mind the fact that the engines emmisions and what not must comply with the engines year of manufacture, so you would actually need to leave the cat on!

dodgy! very dodgy

Is that so? Just as well my A+ metro 1380 engine has no number on it.

ive never understood it either, but the trick with later mpi cars and what not is to fit a earlier engine and get round the emissions and what.

i cant see how its really enforcable, i guess its one of those looks good on paper' ideas that the dvla have.

Being M reg it could be a '94 as you can remove them from pre some date in 95 cars.

My 1993 car passed the MOT without CAT and SPI injection stuff...

look at pictures

Its very grey area about cat / injection removal.

The MOT tester is supposed to do a visual inspection to check it is there. A lot of people I know (inc me!) have ditched the cat and have had no problems. If the emissions are Ok you should be too. I would keep it in a safe place just in case...

It's some time in 93 not 95. Cats were mandatory from Aug 92, but if you car is a 92 or 93 (not sure of the cut off) you can legally remove it. Trust mine to be a 95, but it does have an older engine fitted.

It was compulsary for them to be fitted for the MOT from something like age feb 95 onwards, pre this they can be removed.

If it has been removed you need to tell the inspector as I believe it comes under different regs. May want to check on the Kit car forum.

If you can't be bothered with putting the cat back on, whack a few litres of cellulose thinners in the tank when it's nearly empty, cut with about 30% methanol.

Cellulose thinners, no sulphur/nitrogen. So running about 30% methanol drops the combustion temperatures, hence less atmospheric nitrogen burns. Pass test, job done. thumbup
