Sorry - i realise this has been covered before, but ive searched the forums and cant quite find the answers im looking for (close but sadly no cigar).

Okay, scores on the doors: 2001 (late registered - i think October) 996 - i realise that PCM is largely useless on pre 04 996's but id still like to attempt to use it as the girlfriend has stolen my TomTom 710 and wont return it for fear ill set it to german speech to annoy her (as indeed i did last time i saw it).

I am still trying to make sense of the PCM in the car, so far i think i have established the following
1) I think i know where im headed with the mobile phone nonsense now i need a pay as you go Vodafone credit card sized SIM (as vodafone are 900, not 1800 mhz etc). I will attempt to source one of these at the weekend. Once thats in i just need to divert my mobile to the PAYG SIM when im in the Porker. Orange remain as useful as a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, so ive gotten this far via piston heads.
2) The car has a Navtech CD in the sat nav unit which proclaims itself to be "Great Britain, 2000 - 2002". From what ive read ive either got PCM-1 8 bit, or PCM-1 16 bit installed. I *think* there are chances of updating with some sort of Vauxhall/Opel derived nav tech software if its PCM-1 16 bit. Apparently Porsche dont support either anymore which is useful in the same way that Orange are (see above).
3) i have the technical knowhow of a jacket potatoe.

So my questions are as follows:

How can i tell definitively which version of PCM i have ?

How do i upgrade this so that it doesnt think im driving across a field when i use the new section of the A33 ? (what was this Vauxhall link ?, and does it involve bartering with someone who has a "slammed Nova, innit"

Ive seen a navtech PCM 1 16 bit upgrade on fleabay for 99 quid, can i buy this and expect it to just work ?

Do i need to upgrade the firmware to make any such revisions and if so how ? please write instructions on the screen in crayon, as noted before im really not that clever.

Thanks in advance, (and sorry for the long post. im overly verbose when the coffee kicks in).

R.

I think that the forums on Renntech should have what you need to know at www.renntech.org
