The screen on the back of my D50 appears to have gone awry.......

when previewing pics that have a white/bright background on the cameras LCD screen, the background alternates between the (correct) white and then is replaced by black. This has just started to happen, thankfully it doesnt appear to compromise the quality of the pictures (just burnt a load on to a CD).

Wondering whether anybody has had similar issues? Would prefer not to have to pack the kit up and track back to jessops!!!

Thanks CAB

It's supposed to do that - it's a feature for showing the highlights/over-exposure thingy whatsit (out of my depth, waffle, waffle) - right?

He's right. I'm not sure how you do it on a D50, but I'd guess you have a round thumbpad thing on the back of the camera - this scrolls through pictures in one direction, and viewing modes in the other. You can view things like exif/exposure information, highlights, shadows, etc. one of the options will be to just view the image.

Its actually pretty handy for exposures, accessible from the up-down button to the right of your lcd screen, press it again to see histograms/file info/ISO settings etc, or just keep pressing in preview mode till its gone.

I leave mine on this setting all the time - it's important to know if youre burning out the hightlights so that you can drop the exposure a bit.
