Pull the accounts of some of the companies. They don't make that much money. RCI in the motor industry averages about 3% at the moment, which is poor.

How much did you pay for your TT, how long did you have it, how many miles did you do, and how much were you offered?

Its friday afternoon and chill out time..but,the original poster is correct .The bid/offer spread at a dealer is at least 20% of the car price ,for what? Check out the trade-in cars covered in bird shit at your local OPC awaiting preparation to see why you pay 10k more than the car is worth in the showroom coz you got a coffee, bourbon biscuit and a pointless warranty.Have a good weekend.

... pointless warranty ...
Given the number of R*S (apologies for swearing) threads on here, the warranty sounds to be anything but pointless.

However, back to the topic. Surely the reason that OPC's can do this is because people let them. There are enough mugs out there who will pay top dollar for a new Porsche and then take a seriously expensive bath when it comes to trade-in for it to be possible for dealers to survive. If more people turned their noses up then the dealers would have to change their tactics.

I agree but not enough people do research before they buy as to where cars are trading in the real world...plus most of them need finance...my last example of the great dealer gag was a 996tt offered to me at 59k..i phoned another opc the next day saying i was a seller of the identical car and got a 46k bid..nice work if you can get it...

Well join the scammers then!

When I buy a lawnmower from a lawnmowershop they don't guarantee to buy it back off me at 2% below retail price in X years time. Why should a garage do the same? Particularly when you look at the Vat off the gross, sales commision, warranty cost, vehicle checkover, cost of financing the car on the forecourt, inevitable front end respray, odd couple of tyres etc. Buying used cars back is a service any garage offers customers to provide convenience when changing. If any customer doesn't like the cost of this convenience then sell the car somewhere else.

Well they put me off. I am keeping mine, putting some GT3 monoblocks and a PSE on it, and getting it Zymolled.

Lovely!

They always tell me they dont make money on new cars, used cars, servicing, open days, bodywork repairs, parts etc, etc. They employ 35 people in my local OPC and have just spent probably close to 2 million quid relocating the dealership..Anyone else got a business like that that survives? Its all bollox they rip us off in every sector,300 quid for a new horn was the icing on the cake for me at my last service, whats it made of gold and the mechanic earns a grand a day?soapbox

I never understand these threads.

Porsche GB have a business to run. And they are profitable. Don't resent that. If you don't want anything to do with them, then do the work yourself and buy and sell privately. They need to have a decent margin on the cars, otherwise they wouldn't be the company they are. They wouldn't afford the nice premises and pleasant staff that all demand more money than the your local Ford garage to maintain. They are an aspirational brand, and only manage to maintain that by spending money on posh premises and paying their salesmen better than their competition does. I bet there aren't 2 salesmen that would be able to afford a 911 working in each dealership, if they weren't Porsche employees.

I think the threads should say "I'm really disappointed in the offer I got on my car... I thought I'd get £5k more... I'd thought I'd be able to swap for less... I now can't afford another Porsche... I'll have to sell it privately and that involves work..." - All these sentiments I can agree with. But I don't resent them for employing salesmen who reinforce my buying decision when I'm purchasing a car, but need to make a profit when I come to selling it back to them.

Yes every one has got to make a living but how many salesman are passionate about what they sale?We car buyers are seen as a meal ticket and a big one at Porsche and while i'm ranting service rate £105 per hour when the tech probably gets 10-15% of that.I think i would have fewer fake palm trees and dolly birds and something more down to earth.grumpy
