A happy combo. of circumstances mean that I can afford to buy a longterm toy for my garage. Up to now I have moved from one 'the latest hot new toy' to the next changing on average at least once a year. I'll probably continue to do that (997GT3 next) but I'm now looking forward to tucking something 'special' away in my garage for high days and holidays. It needs to take me to places like the 'Ring and perform well when it gets there, be a bit special to own and lend itself to gradual developement (essential to retaining my interest as I really want to keep this car for ever).I've narrowed it down to the above two cars - opinions appreciated. How do you think they'll each stand up as investments? Obviously the newer car is still going to drop for a while yet but what about in say ten years time?

The 964rs is a more special car.

I've been around the ring as a passenger in both, and although the GT3RS is a very good car, it just does not evoke the same feelings as a 964RS.

I think as something to keep 10 years, the 964RS will be the better option based purely on the numbers of them available.

Pugsey,

I have a 356 Cabriolet and a GT3 RS the 356 reminds me of a 964RS
aircooled ,great on a shortish journey - but would I want to travel
to somewhere like SPA thrash the car round then drive it back ?
No ...
The GT3 RS is a superb all round car and the engine can take a lot of abuse

I should have added that would quite like to take part in the Porsche Speed Championship too - not in a major way, just 'as and when', but the car would need to be up to it.

ex- speed championship drivers/Porsches turning up ( 993 RSRs/964RSs/911 Carrera RSs etc )

Thanks for that - yes I had already intended to try to get there - any day do or is one better than the other from the point of view of what's going on?

I quite fancy entering my car in the stock class (no cage etc), what the easiest way to get a valid race license?

I'd want a cage in!

For sprints/hillclimbs you just need a "Non-Race National B" licence. You can download the form from the MSA website. No medical (usually) or test is needed just pay your dosh - about £25-£35 if I remember correctly. Also, they run from 1st Jan - 31st Dec so if you don't need it until next year, then wait!

Its also great fun and makes trackdays more interesting now
as I try and go for a lap or two then come in rather than going round and around in circles
this has helped get me in the mind set for sprints
you will not believe how some of these 924/911 will leave you wondering
F*$%&ing hell -- how did they go up that hill or round that track so quick
the tracks on the calander this was
Croft
Angelsey
Castle Coombe
Goodwood
Cadwell Park

the hillclimbs Included -
Shelsey Walsh
Gurston Down
Prescott
Loton Park
Wiscombe Park
Harewood
Longleat

I'll be there on Saturday to hold up the aircooled banner with my 993RS-R and I am looking forward to locking horns with the ex-speed guys who are coming out to play in another class. Hopefully this hot weather will hold up and we may see a few class records tumble, which will make a change there because for the last couple of years we have been "blessed" with rain in the afternoons which does slow you down somewhat.

For a toe dip into speed events (either hillclimbs or sprints) you could do a lot worse than pick a 964RS (either Lwt or CS), in my view they are close to ideal for the job compared with any other Porsche production car. You can make them go a lot faster with Motec (ask RL-G who will be there on Saturday in his red RHD) and are lighter than the 993/996 out of the box.

Timmo, I collected your trophy from Cadwell last week and will let you have it when I see you. The top two finishers ended up with a really nice Cadwell Park red baseball cap, your's is the one with a number "2" on it .....

Tim. If only you had stuck to the diet..

You could have been a number one...... Instead of a number two.

Never mind, a couple of carbo doors and some senna pods and you'l be a winner!

Maybe Tim will let you fence it to raise some money for his carbon fibre habit

(sorry that was below the belt!)

Come along on Saturday and you might have to add the 993RS to the list as well.

Dad's the word over the trophy.

I believe the saying that you are looking for w.r.t. PH & JT is: "the older you get, the faster you used to be". laugh
