My gearbox is currently in pieces, and as luck would have it it's the expensive pieces that appear to require replacement - the protective treatment on the pinion wheel appears to have failed, I'm guessing due to heat...

Does anybody know of a reliable and reasonable source of GT3 gearbox components?

I don't want anything less than a proper rebuild, but is it worth considering parts salvaged from a low mileage wreck? If so, does anybody know a source?

Thanks,
Piloti

Ouch - nasty...

I'd give the usual suspects a call, JZ Machtech, Parr Motorsport and maybe Carnewal.

Is the car a MKI or II? If its MKI, make sure you upgrade the syncros whilst the box is out. Note that the MKII has a gearbox oil cooler on it but you'd need the complete casing etc. Im afraid you are looking at a lot of money whichever way you do it (unless its covered by warranty?)

Call Roger Brown at PowerHaus.

www.powerhausii.com/

The largest stockist of OEM Porsche gearsets, I've used him several times for gear sets for my 993GT2, excellent value and great service.

I'd be inclined to consider closing a few of the ratios up a bit in the lower gears if doing this type of work and needing new gears.

I have a vague recollection that someone has figured out how to add a cooler to the Mk 1 GT3 box without changing the casing...

Me too. Involved a separate electric oil pump and some other bits and bobs. Can't remember where I read about it though.

Thanks for the thoughts so far - I've mailed Roger Brown at PowerHaus. Presumably I'd have to pay VAT and import duty on any parts imported from the US?

Regards the gearbox oil cooler, that's certainly something I'd like to investigate if anybody has a reference available.

Am expecting a big bill (6k?) but can't in good conscience ascribe the problem to anything other than wear and tear. Good news is that the clutch is "like new".

Titanic GT3 list is almost certainly where I read about it.

Not that you'll be wanting to add to the bill unnecessarily but whilst you have the 'box out, stick a single mass flywheel on as well!

What normally happens is the four point bearing behind the pinion; ie the thrust bearing; collapses and causes terminal failure of the crown wheel and pinion. The oil temperature climbs to well over 150 celsius and if you track the car and use the kerbs the inevitable hammering will destroy the box.
There is no cheap answer I am afraid. Oil cooling can easily be added - you need an electric pump and the best are probably the ones used by Nissan on their R32 Skylines and a couple of weld on fittings as well as a cooler of course! In order to stiffen up the cases to stop the damage caused by using the kerbs you may want to consider using a machined from solid side plate. You could go the whole hog and use a special bearing carrier on your diff that uses a HUGE bearing (the same as the latest factor RSR's)but it all costs. By far the best are those supplied by Paul Guard of GT gears in the States.
As has already ben said this is the ideal time to change the ratios but its all down to personal preference and usuage type.
Good luck. If you need any further help please contact me.
Richard.

You may get a nice surprise and not get stuck for it but assuming the value is accurately stated on the shipping documentation it's quite likely.

Assuming you're buying just internals and if the size and weight aren't outrageous you could put them in your checked luggage and the VAT/duty/shipping savings could pay for the flight!

I had a gearbox radiator installed on my MK1. I needed an external electrical pump, which is operated by a thermostat at 110 C. The radiator is mounted underneath the gearbox. Not terribly expensive, but well worth it I think. When I see/hear how often the electrical pump is on on a really warm track day, it makes me wonder how hot MK1 gearboxes get without a radiator. If anybody neds more specific details, I can ask my mechanic

Thanks for the suggestions. Especially the Quaife box which looked interesting, though I'm not keen on all this flappy paddle nonsense

I think we'll go for an exchange box from Freisinger in Germany, as an economic solution. Comes with new synchros and bearings, as well as any other bits that were worn. Also carries a one year warranty.

Anybody got any experience of Freisinger?
