a review of the 997 turbo in yesterday's Independent stated that the 0-100 (mph) time was quicker for the tiptronic than the manual. is this correct?

According to Porsche's own figures. But this is probably academic. It's only a fraction of a second and is likely to be a consequence of the gearing (Manual 6-spd, Auto 5-spd).

It would seem so. But think of it as getting served what you ordered quicker at McDonald's than at The Ivy. Harumph.

what an excellent analogy (though I preface this by noting that my experience of tip vs manual is in the main confined to the 968, and one would hope things had moved on a tad since 1992)

launching the tip you can stand on the brake and build up boost with some throttle before releasing, makes for a very quick take-off, hence the quick time.

Yeah, it takes some believing that a torque converter based box can be quicker all ways up than a manual with more gears. It seems to me that it could only be that the gearing is rigged for good statistics.

It's a bit disappointing that they're labouring on with the traditional TipS, when's the dual clutch system going to be here? It would make the choice of gearbox a whole lot easier!

safely yes, whether the transmission will last very long is another matter although I think you'll find most manufacturers 0-60 times involve some pretty unsympathetic driving.

Also, the car realises you're doing a standing start and "tenses" the variable centre diff, sorting your traction woes out before the stall point of the torque convertor.

You can do that with a manual to a degree - but bloody hell is it bad for the clutch!!!!!

Great - so the tip is better than the manual. Thank God that's settled at long last.
Nice.

Hate to correct you and be a pedant, but you've spelled 'better' wrong. In a sentence where the word 'Tiptronic' (or its vulgarisation 'tip')is used, some irregularities are forced on the comparitive adjective, when it is followed by the word 'manual'. So whilst you wrote 'better', you were meant to use the irregular form of 'better' which in this instance is 'shitter'.

Thanks for your attention.
