I have been in the market for a 1999+ manual 996... but on autotrader, there are literally hundreds of 996's in the tiptronic flavour. They seem to be much cheaper than their manual counterparts and was wondering if that is the general trend? Are tips generally cheaper than manuals? Or (say it ain't true) are tips just more popular?

Depends on the region. Tippy's were more pricey in the city when I was looking a while back.

to be fair, last year when I bought mine I noticed the tip's where demanding a slight premium over the manual cars.

havnt checked for a while but its down to what you want, if youve got a bad knee, get a tip, if you prefer a manual get a manual.

Or exercise your knee, sell the tip and then get a manual

Tip?On a Porsche?Isnt a Porsche supposed to be about the unique driving experience of a true sports car? Then why stick in an auto box?.When these cars are new some people buy the image of the car..ie tip buyers..as the cars become older the enthusiasts buy them to actually use for the intended purpose of a sports car(do lotus do an auto box?)That is why the older manual cars are in demand because Porsche sell nearly as many new tips as manuals but the target audience for tips reduces as the cars get older. All imho of course.eek

Damn, an imho...

I've got a tippy cos I struggled with the clutch thanks to a bad case of bikers knee. The tip lets me own a car I couldn't otherwise live with on a daily basis.

IMHO, the 996 at least has a 5-speed tip, so that would still do some justice to the 911. but i cannot say the same for a 993 tip which is 4-speed.

A very accurate assessment, I think.

aye spot on (and I agree tips are a godawful choice unless like Bliar there are medical circumstances)

on a different forum someone incorrectly stated that tips were 80% of Porsche sales - a quick check on the OPC search tool revelaed that 3/4 of 911, Boxster, Cayman are specced as god intended.
