106 bumpsteer and suspension knocking
Discussion
Do all 106s suffer from bad bumpsteer? The non pas steering on mine is very light at speed and any small bumps in the road seem to travel up through the steering wheel. Is it just a case of worn bushes?
On very hard cornering the steering also judders which i think is coming from the inside wheel as the weight is transferred off it.
I have fitted 15inch wheels recently but I had the same issues with the old 13s.
Any ideas? All the bushes seems fairly good stil and its only just had its MOT so they should be alright. Everything apart from the wheels are standard.

you aRE NOT SUFFERING FROM BUMP STEER , AS YOU STATE YOU RECENTLY FITTED BIGGER WHEELS ,PRESUMABLY WITH LOWER PROFILE TYRES , THREREFORE HAVING AN EVEN STIFFER SIDEWALL THAN THE PREVIOUS TYRES YOU ARE FEELING EVERY BUMP IN THE ROAD FED UP THROUGH THE SUSPENSION AND STEERING,this has nothing to do with bump steer, opps sorry just noticed the caps lock , sorry,

Like I said above, before I fitted the bigger wheels it was just as bad. I have standard suspension.

what carl is saying is this not bump steer - bump steer is when suspension travel causes the steering to turn - you wont get this on a 106 unless you've got a bent suspension component or it's heavily modified
this sounds like you need to examine shock absorber and suspension bush condition very carefully to see where the weakness is

Whats the best way of going about it then? I've had a prod around with a bar and nothing seems to have any obvious play in it. Whats the standard way of finding out if a bush is worn?
get in there with a large pry bar - you're looking for excess compliance or cracks/splits in bushes and play in joints, while you're in there see if you can see any bent components - check rack mountings are in good condition - also give the shocks the "bounce test" and check them for leaks

There is a bit of a bumpsteer issue with 106's so I wouldn't get too worried about anything falling off or being too worn. It can be fixed but takes a bit of cutting and welding so you'll probably be best of living with it... Although if it appears to be getting worse then I'd drop the wheels off and give the whole lot a good spanner check!
