Slightly squealy windscreen/dash (993)?
Discussion
I knew there was something to ask.
Element of 'they all do that' endangering this query but following a replacement screen lately, the old girl's been making a dreadful racket from all along the dash and it seems to be related to the screen interface, somehow.
Any plans one might submit as cunning?
Might the HW suspension be sommat to do wi' it?
I must say, whilst trying to restore aspects of what I'd always thought as dubious a 'GT' description to the manner of the car's conveyance forth, it does seem a fruitless task; there's so much general creak and squeak going on that the Piston Head logo might be apter than I'd imagined - I'm sure Blackbeard's 18th century tub must have been similarly riven.

Too few horse brasses, that's your problem. If you had enough of them on display, their jangling would drown out the squeaks from the screen
The owner of a car I went to look at on Saturday with a view to buying told me had bought some form of lubricant/sealant to try to silence his squeaky screen, following a recommendation from PH. Seemingly, you just lift the seal and squeeze it underneath. I can't for the life of me remember what he said it was called though. Doh.

It's not unusual DeR,,you can try some lube.....vaseline, petroleum jelly or even waxoyl between the screen and rubber...this should cure things until it dries out.....
or alternatively you could have the car seam welded and a fully integrated roll cage fitted so that the car is so stiff the body will not move!

The noise is the rubber outer seal rubbing on the bodywork. For a quick fix you want some 'Pedros Ice Wax' bicycle chain lubricant [purchase from Ebay]. Run your finger under and around the outside of the seal and dribble the product into the gap. Last for about six months.
The other option is to have the screen refitted at an OPC where they will apply a 'teflon tape' to the underside of the seal. Nothing wrong with the above method though...

I will away down the local OPC on the morrow, whilst averting my eyes from temptation.
I should have known better - bit of flair and initiative from a main dealer in any marque?
Not on the service menu?
Forget it!
Couldn't have been less helpful.
Let's try Wilmslow, see if there are any artisans over the age of 12 in the 'service' dept who might want to charge me for something which apparently, normally gets subcontracted out...
Hopeless.

You can buy the teflon tape that is used for 993 and 996 windscreens from OPC, it's not difficult to fit at all, you don't need to remove the winscreen.
Carefully remove the windscreen seal on the outside of the windscreen. Clean the metal frame were the seal will touch, cut and apply the telfon tape. Then carefully put the seal back. All done.
I did this to mine using the instructions on rennlist and no more squeek.

DeR......you could always do it yourself??? It shouldn't take more than a few minutes of your valuable time and will save you the hasle of driving over to the dealership.

I do believe the man's taken leave of his senses.
Sorry Squire, what was I thinking?
Surely one of your minions would be able to assist....It really is easy, you just peel back the screen outer rubber,,,,clean away any grit or dirt,,,,then towel dry,,,,,,then repeat adding Sir's choice of lube under the rubber to complete.....possible downside of urchins grubby mits over your Beetle for a while, but surely that can't be any worse a fate than taking it to an OPC?

I've used pedros and the effect lasted around 6 months. I'm going to give PLEDGE a try now as this was amazing at removing an interior squeak
FWIW I also pledge the alloys as it makes cleaning so much easier.

Ok, Al since you've advocated it, I'll get on the case...

I have the EXACT same problem after having my screen 'swapped' last week. Five hours of hell and worry, especially when the cheese wire came out! I actually had the squeek a week before it went in too, which was odd, but I popped into my local OPC for a drive around the car park while the mechanic had a listen....
Out came some lube, lifted the rubber around the outside of the screen, few squirts and then....................
TOTAL SILENCE!
Squeeky rubber you see, and I am told they often do that after a swap. Just waiting for said lube to dry up now! It is the most annoying noise in the world and requires either lots of speed or a loud button set to 11 to remove it!

I've just had the front screen replaced on my MK1 GT3 by Mike at www.sportsandclassic.com/contact_us.htm
It creaked and squeaked to the point of driving me to distraction before it's replacement.
Now it's perfectly silent..............................
I believe he used the genuine Porsche anti-squeak tape and the services of a fitter who was familiar with the foibles of the 996 screen( he also used a genuine Porsche "kit" on the rear screen to silence the squeaky "rattle" that had previously ruined the enjoyment of driving the car along anything other than billiard smooth roads)
Thanks Mike !
