I am tapping away at the calcultor in order to justify getting myself into a Porsche!
Over the past few years I have updated the daily drivers every couple of years - and that depreciation costs over time. My new plan is run my/wifes cars for longer, accept that an Audi tdi is my work car and put something for the weekend in the garage. So...
Required: early Boxster, 2.5, manual. Max £14k
Some questions:
Is an early 2.5 a 'real' Porsche?
Do these cars wear their milage well? Will it still drive like it should?
OPC or private? Am I in Arfer Daley territory here?
Do running costs escalate with age / milage?
What 'pitfalls' should I look out for at this price range?
Taking into account depreciation, servicing, petrol etc etc - what would this cost to run over 3 years and 15k miles?
Thanks in advance

Oh dear God, does this one apply to the Boxsters as well as the front engined stuff. It wears the badge, it drives like a Porsche, its a Porsche...

If its been treated well, then it will be as good as new. Proper engineering...

Early Box is definitely Specialist or private territory, but thats not Arfur stuff. Try 911virgin.co.uk and a few others from the adverts, or go back through the Porsche threads for a while.

No, but the chances of component failure increase as they approach lifespans. ukross said:

Not my area of expertise, but isnt that at the bottom of the price range at the moment... ukross said:

Dont think anyone has a problem with the three year forecast, but bloody well drive it properly...10k PA might see you smiling more...i would have thought an older boxster would not cope well to only being driven at the weekend
particularly as you would mostt likely be making the most of it and ragging the arse of it
Go with the porsche as a daily driver option, you will enjoy it a lot more
and to hell with the depreciation - at that price and age, i would have thought that in 3 years the price would be similar regardless of the mileage you put on it

look - no matter what porsche you bought, someone would say something...
if its a boxster, you get "couldnt you afford a 911" and if its a 911 "your paid far too much" or whatever...
The fact is - get what YOU want - dont listen to peoples jealousy.
The boxster is a very good car - the 2.5 wont set your world on fire, but for what you pay for, its a very rewarding well built car.
I would reiterate what was said above - you would be better off spending a bit more on one - and using it as an everyday car, than being at the bottom of the market and leaving it stuck in a garage...
golden rule is buy on condition - FSH is a must - every 12k/12mo - indys are fine - especially if specialists...
happy hunting

Hi there
14K you should get more than a 2.5L boxster if you look hard enough.
Get a warranty put on it preferebly OPC if not a good other warranty.
Pitfalls are a few but get it checked over not by the RAC man or AA man a proper independant specialist should run you in the region of £150 for a inspection.
Rear main oil seals leak.
Header tanks leak coolant.
Heat shields rattle on exhaust system.
Suspension may be noisey with age as the drop links wear and so do the lower arms they creak and groan.
If its a manual car listen for gearbox noise on idle and when you drive for any unusual noise...
Ignition key may not return to normal when you crank engine if so it needs new ignition barrel ...quite a common problem after years of use.
Variable valve timing units pack up so get them checked with suitable diagnostic gear...you can actuate them to see if they are working or not.
Roofs are generally noisey in operation compared to a bmw or mercedes so this is normal.
Drive alot of them dont settle for a basic spec 1 see whats about cause there are loads for sale....
Hope this doesent frighten you off 1..
Thanks
mike
