Hello all -
Can anyone please suggest a good supplier of an outdoor car cover as over-winter accommodation for a '98 Spyder? It'll need to cope with a fairly exposed location, so strong ties/other anchoring is a must. I know, I know, such beauties should only be kept in a garage, but, well... it's a long story...

Any suggestions gratefully received

Im going to have the same problem with my rush when the ultima comes (single garage), so im going to invest in a exteriour carcoon.... you can peg those down too... and it keeps the car nice and dry.

just a sugestion!

Thanks for this - a good suggestion (and a friend of mine keeps his 1948 Alvis in one so I know they're good for precious vehicles!) but as this is going to be on someone else's land (someone else's tarmac in fact!), I don't know whether pinning something of this size down is going to be an option - Do you know of any good 'on-vehicle' covers that will fit (or can be made to fit) the Spyder?
Thanks!!

How about these? www.classicadditions.com/heavyduty_waterproof_car_covers.cfm?CFID=5809727&CFTOKEN=87254321

Have two of them for my bikes (custom fit can be ordered) and they fit like a glove. Admittedly my bike covers are for indoor use, but outdoor covers are available. Their workmanship is excellent and the covers are very durable.

Thanks very much for that- I've just spoken to them and they're going to call me back. It seems that not everyone knows what an Ultimate Spider (sic) is!

Has anyone bought a cover from Covercraft at all? They're coming in at significantly higher prices than anyone else - is it worthwhile?

Yes, I have a couple of these, one for a BMW and the other for my GTW (very similar to a normal run of the mill GTR, but better IMHO), only kidding before anyone starts to grizzle! I am very pleased with them and they seem to work well but I don't know that they will have a pattern for a Spyder?

If security is an issue, and you have somewhere to store it, a used 20ft shipping container would work. You could fit a dehumidifier to prevent condensation becoming a problem and they are available from about £500 plus delivery.

They won’t suit everyone but offer greater protection for your pride and joy than a blow-up tent!

that's a great idea, Storer. any idea who might be able to supply me with a container(short of going and "borrowing" one permanently from Dover docks? )?

by the way - thanks for your help, everyone - this is really great!!

no - they don't - and they would have to make one bespoke, coming in at around £265 for a "Noah" (presumably will work well in flash flood conditions? hehe) which is nearly £100 more than the equivalent bespoke from Classic Additions.

I don't suppose anyone has tried both brands and can compare and contrast for me?

Ha funny ha... thanks for that! *please note the "sic"!!!*

I was parodying the very nice sales girl at one of the car cover companies I have spoken to today, who put her hand half over the mouthpiece of the phone to talk to a male colleague and ask him whether he knew what size cover an "ultimate spider" would need.

rofl

sorry - i thought it was funny...

Sorry Puds, should have noticed the (sic!!). Did notice that you are new to the forum - you'll have to get used to the occasional ribbing to survive on here.

A cover for a 12 foot 'hairy Ultimate spider' certainly would be funny though! hehe hehe

That's ok - no worries

you're right though - a 12' spider cover would certainly be an interesting tailoring project...

Before he comes back, I think you will find 'Storer' is completely descriptive in that selling those containers is his job.

Classic Additions have a pattern for the GTR because they made a cover for me. Took them a couple of goes to get it fitting right so should now have the patterns.
Ask if they have one for the CanAm. May not be a direct fit but would be a good starting point.
The one I have is water proof but I doubt it would work long term.

If my car had to stay out long term and I had no cover I would not only want it waterproof I would also want to disguise it somewhat. I'd build a wooden frame and cover it with damp proof membrane builders use then cover that with a tarpaulin. The tarp alone is not good enough as they are not truly waterproof.
With bricks around the bottom to stop it all blowing away the finished affair will just look like a pile of bricks and not attract attention.

Steve D-

2 things:
1) thanks for the heads-up about the container issue! my partner and i have in fact already more or less written off that idea anyway, for a number of reasons.
2) i hear you on the subject of disguising it. the proposed location is a secure compound with monitored cctv - and it already stores cars - so that's less of an issue. i like the idea of extra weather protection though - definitely something to think about - thank you!

Steve is partly right. I run a storage company but not for cars (don't want flammable liquids, etc). I used to sell containers but due to my location (about as far from a port as you can get in this country) it's not possible to compete on price.

I know a container is not very aesthetically pleasing to look at but they don't blow away or collapse like your "covered pile of bricks" might. There would also be room for other bits and pieces in there as well.

If you do want to find one, try Yell.com for your area and search for shipping containers. Get one with a box lock fitted and buy a good (£60-£90) padlock.

If I was storing something I had worked hard to build and afford, I would want it in a secure building of some kind and not just a compound.

Just my thoughts for what they are worth.

Here here! Portable covers and such are O.K. for the short term but as the man said, get it stored properly if it is going to be mothballed. Just out of interest, what colour is it?..................

Thanks very much for all your input guys - plenty of food for thought there...

And as for the colour, well, that would be telling!! All i'm saying is that it ain't yellow!! (not that there's anything wrong with yellow. or red. really...)

I have an indoor cover for the Spyder which is a beautiful fit, it was actually supplied from the factory so they may know which company holds the patterns - i dont know who made it and it has no markings on it - but as I said really nice fit, cheers
