993 suspension - help please.
Discussion
hello all
just wondered if i could have some advice on the suspension set up on a 993 c4 varioram that i'm buying. i have very little idea how these cars actually work - i just like looking at them and driving them - so please bear with my ignorance....
basically, i'm told that the suspension on the car will need replacement soon. i'm therefore looking for some advice on what to do.....
my primary concern is to maximise comfort and ride quality while also making the car handle pretty well too. the car will be used for a daily 40 mile commute + weekend drives, often with my 3 year old daughter in the back. it's extremely unlikley that i'll be using the car for track days. slight lowering is an option, as i guess it will improve its looks on 17" wheels, but again i wouldn't want to compromise the ride.
so far i've had the bilstein ps9 kit and the m030 sports suspension kit recommended. however, having read some old threads/posts on here i'm not sure if these options really match up with my desire for "comfort". from what i've read bilstein HDs would seem better for me but the specialists i've spoken to haven't recommended them.
also, and this is where i get really thick, what exactly do i need for a full suspension overhaul? shocks, springs + fitting? gert carniwel have been recommended as the best option to supply.
thanks for your help.

Hello
i have fitted the genuine porsche suspension kit drop by 20mm and it only costs £400 from the dealer to buy ...shocks and springs.
you may need some top mounts if they are spilt.
You will need to send it some where that can do a 993 4 wheel alignment with all the kinetic toe equipment on the car as it has collapsing bushes twhen it goes around corners..
Hope this helps.

Noz, go for the Bilstein HD shocks and M033 springs. I had a pax in a 993C2 Tip with those fitted and the ride was lovely! I'm sure it still handles great too.
I recently fitted the Bilstein HD/M030/turbo ARB kit (Carnewal) to my C2S as my standard shocks were goosed and I thought I'd go for a wee upgrade at the same time. It has completely transformed the car (partly because the old shocks were knackered, I'm sure). Had the M033 lowering springs before which are standard on this car. I can push it through the twisties with a confidence I did not have before.

Any chance you have a part number or code for this?
FYI, helped a mate fit Bilstein HD's and M033 springs to his car - fantastic ride and body control. QUite a bit more than £400 but very very nice. If you want comfort then i'd suggest you're better off with M033 than M030 springs, similar ride height but not as stiff.
Get this, my 993 is in the classifieds (so i can get a Morgan Aero 8 or an Ultima GTR) and yet when someone mentions a full M033 kit for £400 what do i do?
Dash outside, jack the car up, take off all 4 wheels, and see if any of the shocks or springs need replacing, because if they then i may as well get the M033 kit and keep the car for a while but, alas, my shocks and springs are in great shape.
FYI - i called Porsche Cars Reading and they said that next door (PCGB) still have two sets on the shelf for manual 993's (don't know what the difference is for tip cars) @ £400 + VAT

How can you tell if they need replacing?
Springs all undamaged (and i've never heard of spring breakages on a 993), and no leaks on the shocks. In fact, they're remarkably uncorroded considering the car's done 98k miles and is 10 years old, so i suspect they've been replaced once before. And did the bounce test of course.
Nodz, just call your local OPC and ask for the 993 M033 kit, shocks and springs, £400 + vat.
Tell them you know there are two sets at Porsche Cars Great Britain

Dan, every time i get in the 993 (it's my daily driver) i seriously question whether i am doing the right thing. Neither Aero nor GTR will be as practical, but i figure i should use my old 540 for work every day and get something a bit "special" for weekends. The 540 is the perfect car for doing 24 miles a day on a dual carriageway, so i figure "why not?".
Or i could spend £1k on HD's and M033 springs, £200 on HIDs, £1k on seats and harnesses, £500 on a 996 steering wheel...

Had any interest in it, Pete (other than mine)?
If I'm still looking when you get back from the States, I'm going to have to come and have a look at the VS-mobile
