having finally got my head round spending a huge amount of money (in my eyes) on a second car esp with a baby due in october my wife has "concerns" over how easy / hard it's going to be with a newborn. Now i understand that baby's need loads of stuff and if using the porsche for weekend / days trips my wife needs to be on board with the idea. She is extremely supportive and understands my passion for cars etc BUT i want to show her the following which is where i need your help.

1. a pic of a rear facing seat in the rear of a 996.
2. a pic of a small pushchair in the front bonnet compartment.
3. any pics of general storage area.

i know that really i'm asking a lot of the 996 to be a great family car etc but i do have a focus and an audi for use when we need more space. all i want to do is to get by with the car untill the baby is bigger etc. I've done some surfing on here and understand that it can be done etc.

Lots of people have suggested waiting till after 9 months as things get easier but i have the funds in place and want to start hunting within the next week just need to get my wife totally on board and show her that if she is willing to help in terms of what we take with us and how we pack things going down to the coast for a drive is going to be safe and ok. I know the easiest thing will be to take her down to my local opc and show here but the system we have def. wont fit and we are waiting for a friend to donate his car seat. my intention is to buy another car seat and pushchair system just for the porsche and leave the other bits with her in the focus.

i know i should be sensible and either bank the deposit or get a m3 or something the same but i really want to get into a 996. can anyone help?

thanks again.

Doesn't help with your query but I wouldn't assume that the M3 is any more practical than the 911 in terms of getting kids in and out.

I was mulling over the 911 -v- M3 debate and did some searching over on bm3w.co.uk about this very point. A number of people had posted to say that it rapidly becomes a royal PITA to have to clamber over front seats to get Junior and his/her seat in and out. It has a bit more boot space, I suppose, but it's not going to be THAT much more of a sensible choice.

With that in mind, indulge yourself and get a 996 now. You can always flog it if it proves to be unworkable. That's the view I took (not that we have to worry about the patter of tiny feet yet - just planning ahead and wondering "what it....." and decided it's a 911 (albeit a 993) for me next.

PS You'll need a C2 though. I was quite surprised when I looked at a C4 as to just how much bootspace you seem to lose to accommodate the 4WD gubbins.

yes Whatever you do don't let your missus see a C4 boot or you'll be well and truly busted.

i'm truely shafted as i'm after a turbo and i was only using the M3 as an example. i've really set my heart on a 996 and whatever i decide my wife will be ok as it's my money and won't effect her etc but i do want to prove that the 996 and babies do mix..

fingers crossed that someone has a pic or two?

I believe there is a puschair that will fit in the boot of a C4, but there really isn't much room in there... Good luck!

Quinny Zapp will fit - but is really only suitable for 6 or 9 months old and up as it doesn't recline. I can take a pic of one in the front of my 993 C2 if you like - pretty sure that's smaller than the equivalent 996.

As for a rear facing seat in the back of a 996 - good luck - I don't think this is possible. Front yes, with the airbag deactivated, but not in the back. Front facing seats in the back are possible - I have 2 Porsche seats that go in the back, and I believe there are others.

i realise i may be out of touch, not having needed such things for a while, but is there really a baby seat called a "quinny zap"???

"quinny" being an Elizabethan slang term for a lady's intimate parts....silly

Well I suggest you PM fulham911club and tony996hasgone to see if they can help.

I've certainly never found a rear facing seat that will fit in the back of a 993 - though I didn't try that hard as our youngest was 9 months when I first got the car.

Not sure about the rear facing seat, but on the point of the buggy - if you are keeping the other bigger car you might not need to worry. If its just occasional use then a baby bjorn or similarly silly baby back pack might do for carrying the little one.

For the first few months the Jane Matrix systme might be OK for the car - it goes flat acorss the back seats and is ancored on either seat belt- we had one in my wifes BMW carbiolet which has no room in the back

If its an ont car you will struggle, but if its just an occasional thing it will be fine - there are a few safe options

(feels guity that neither of hie two kids have ever seen the inside of his 911)

I've jsut gone through this . . . sold the Lotus for a more family friendly 996 for the wife and new daughter.

We ended up with a 996 Targa; mainly because its a 2WD model so bigger front storage, its the only model with an opening rear screen and they've already depreciated crazily ... hopefully this will slow as the car reaches 993 prices.

This is a perfectly usuable family car for weekends and depending on the flexibility (literally) of your other half could probably do a week or so holiday. The key stuff is:

1. I could find a rear facing seat to fit in the back. However you can get a deactivation kit for the front a use a porsche seat or any suitable fitting 3rd party seat (so long as you also buy a clip to fit the deactivation kit - these are harder to find but many specialist garages can help you out)

2. The front seat goes right forward an provided you're wife isn't too tall she can sit in the back with reasonable leg room (in my experience her tolerance of being in the back is the limiting factor).

3. We have a Bugaboo buggy which is not small when collapsed. However it fits over the folded rear seat behind the driver. Its easy to get in and out of the targa because of the opening rear screen. I'm not sure you could get it in a regular C2/C4/Turbo.

4. Even with the buggy in place the is still room for changing back, travel cot and a small holdall in the back behind the upright rear seat and ontop of the bugaboo travel bag (recommended as it protects your interior).

5. You still have the front boot which takes a good size roller luggage (much bigger than airline carry-on) and possible a second bag. You also have the front passenger footwell that can take a reasonable size holdall.

Hope that helps . . .

how to make my heart soar to the clouds and plummet to earth, all in the same sentence
