Hello All,

I'm considering changing from my Westfield to a Chimaera, but was unpleasantly suprised when I got a quote to insure it. At the moment I only pay £220 for my Vauxhall powered Westy (it's no slouch!). That figure is for a limited mileage 2nd car policy and fairly reasonable I think. I'm 35, clean license, 11 yrs NCD, garage, all good stuff. When I got a quote for £805 for a Chim from Adria Flux I was most disheartened. Can anybody suggest a source which may bring it down substantially? One of my old bosses (he was very wrinkly though) had a Griff insured at £85 a year! Please tell me £805 can be bettered! I would join the owners club if I get one, are there any decent schemes through the club?

Many thanks,

Nick.

I presume the Westfield was so cheap in comparison because it was classed as a kit car (no offence meant), which traditionally has meant lower premiums. I had the same experience with my Ginetta G32, with larger tuned engine than standard, which was a third of the cost of my Chimaera with similar performance up to 80mph. Also on average TVRs' costs are 60% of premiums, even at the higher rate, that's against an industry norm of 40% or so.

The TVR Car Club does run an insurance scheme via Mannings which in my case gave a premium of just under 12% cheaper than an equivalent one I sourced. I've just had my first claim on my own insurance since I started driving in 1965 and found the Mannings sourced one rapid and professional, everything you'd hope for in an insurance company.

Mannings allow a discount for TVR CC members.

I'm with Bell, I pay £700 to insure my cerb, I am 32 with 7 years ncd, car kept in garage. Tesco's is meant to be fairly cheap as well.

Do a search on Hagerty, ask for Darren, did me a great deal on my Chimaera. They especially like second cars too!

And don't forget A-Plan, whose banner you should see at the top-right of the page.

And a nice thread running on them too here: www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=23&t=256657

Can't understand that, had Chim and now the Cerb insured via Flux on limited miles policies (5000 miles I think) and paying circa £500 and has always been around that region. 34 now, have a claim (for theft) and some points to throw into the mix. You won't match your Westy, they are notoriously cheap to insure I seem to remember, but you should get it down from £800. Try adding a female on if you haven't, sometimes does strange things to a quote and has been known to bring it down quite substantially. Also have always found some wiggle room with AF, they have on occassion tried it on a bit come renewal, quick call to say they have been bettered by £100 and they have always then matched or bettered it. Think my actual policy is with Highway, hoping that Highway have not pulled out and I am in for a nice surprise come renewal.

Hi!
I'm with Liverpool Victoria - 50+, and they prefer 'mature' drivers. My V8S is covered for ca £280 (un-limited miles, 180 days European cover) , and when I enquired about a Tuscan earlier this year, they were in the region of £500.

I had a claim about 2 months ago (not my fault) and I felt they were very professional in the handling of same. A-Plan also offered a similar quote when I renewed in April.

yikes I pay £820 for my Griff with a drink drive, no no claims, 36 yrs old... 2nd car unlimited mileage and garaged....

you surely have to better that, my lowest was circa £500 but limited mileage to 5k....

with your credentials I would expecr circa £350 limited to 5000 miles

Good luck .......

I'll have a look to see if I still have the schedule I did when I renewed my policy of prices, limitations etc

38, 2 year no claims , 2 previous claims still valid as <=3 years ago. No Garage so lives on drive. 3rd car.

Insured on 6000 miles per annum including the Mrs fully comp with track day cover and legal cover cost about £600 from Heritage (cant remember the exact number)

If you are married (or have a partner!) add them to the insurance this will bring it down about £50-£100 as I found when I decided to remove her indoors from my everyday car and was told by Norwich union that they would need an extra £90 as due to the risk increase with me being the only driver.

Go figure.

And yet another vote here for Hagerty.
2 suggestions though if you are going to get a quote from them.

1) Are you planning track days? If you are and other quotes cover you for them (Mannings for instance) you will need to take this into account because the Hagerty insurance DOES NOT. Hagerty price is 10% of the premium PER DAY.

2) Do you plan to put your other half on the insurance? This can make a difference. As someone suggested - it can make it cheaper or put it up - anyones guess really so worth making sure you mention it.

My previous premium didn't include the Mrs and was £497 (43yrs, Full NCD, Garage, 0pts, 5k miles limit, write-off £15k 2yrs ago cry). Hagerty was £394 and the Mrs went on for free.
(Keep the last bit quiet though, I haven't told her - it's for medical emergencies only )

Had my Griff insured for £360 with Footman James.
The car has just been written off and they recon it's only worth £11k.
I guess you only find out how good they are when you have to claim.

Did you not have an agreed value policy with them??? I thought most of FJ's policies were agreed value. If I can be of any help give us a call.
