Cayman 2.7 or Boxster S; what'll be worth more in 3 years?
Discussion
I'm looking at both of these, and am leaning towards the coupe as a daily driver to replace my 968. But its pretty easy to spec. a Cayman 2.7 to £40k (seats, leather, wheels, PASM, wiper, climate, paint)where its a similar price to an absolutely vanilla Box S.
While depreciation isn't the most important thing in my decision, its a factor. Of course, historically its the soft-tops variants of cars that end up worth the most money. But by pricing the Cayman higher than the Box have Porsche succeeded in changing this?
So what do we think will lose value fastest; a £40k Cayman 2.7 with some choice options or a £40k Boxster S with none?
Cheers,
SS7

It depends on what Porsche GB do to support Cayman values.
When the Boxster was at it height of desirability they used to limit the allocation of 2.7 cars to UK dealers. As such there was always a lead time of 8 plus months from order to delivery which was longer than the more freely available 3.2 S.
As a result 2.7 values remained strong and even now it is difficult to find a decent car for under 15k
Of the reviews I have read, most people have scratched their head at Porsche pricing for the base Cayman and I must agree. Would I pay £5k more for a similarly specced Coupe just because it has a roof? certainly not.
IMHO (which means nothing of course) I would go for the Boxster S. They are a great car to run all year round, the base spec is good and if you dig deep to get 18" alloys and a Bose sound system and pick a reasonable colour I dont think you will go wrong.
In three years time I just can't see private punters paying more for a 2.7 Cayman over a similarly spec'd Boxster - especially on the run up to summer.

As with any car work on 50% after 3 years, a boxster will probably be less ~45% due to it being around for ages with many used models available to suit anyones pocket.

So could you have a stab at how much a £85k 997GT3 will be worth after 3 years please?
I'll give you a fiver for it!

Piers, equal value in 3 years time?...that assumes the 997 GT3 will have zero depreciation, unlikely!
