Opinions required on two X Flows
Discussion
Opinions required please on these two X flows that are up for sale, to replace the pile of shrapnel that used to be in my Westie :
ENGINE ONE :
1691cc fresh bore and plateau hone
1300 AE Balanced pistons with pockets machined for valves. Balanced rods, crank, flywheel, clutch cover,
lightened flywheel. Duplex timing gear
ARP Flywheel bolts and big end bolts
New Delphi clutch for 5 speed box
Block has been decked and o-ringed
AE Bearings, Mains, Big ends, Thrusts
Mocal Dry sump pump and home made sump, (can be changed back to standard with new oil pump)
BDA Steel front pulley with Cosworth 24v timing wheel fitted. alloy crank sensor bracket and sensor
Kent 244 cam and followers timing set with offset dowel
Gasflowed cylinder head, 104CFM @ 0.500" valve lift ( checked on superflow 110 flowbench)
Big Valves by Vulcan. Kent Double valves springs to suit camshaft fitted to correct height. Correct Spring retainer caps (steel)
This is brand new unrun, it is worth a fortune
I want £1500 for it, if i add it all up its over 2.5k
ENGINE TWO (which also happens to be MUCH closer to home) :
X-flow for sale, Farndon crank, Cosworth pistons and rods, roller rockers, dry sumped, recent rebuild cost £1200. Dyno'd at 130 bhp at the wheels. AP paddle clutch. Twin 45s. Lightweght alternator, Lucas competition ignition system.
All new valve gear by Paul Ivey. Open to offers.
Thoughts everyone ?

Good question, and one I asked him last night (amongst others. Awaiting reply). He said he built it for his Locost, but doesnt specify why he didn't put it the car. If it's any consolation he works for a small (3 man) engine building company, so maybe something better came along .... (?)
I am err'ing towards the second engine, partly coz it should work out cheaper, and it's also very close to home (would have to pay for shipping with the other one, and also buy unseen). But I dont know which is the better engine, regardless of that.
Any idea what I should offer the chap for engine #2 ?

Have a look at this page, right at the bottom

1600 X-flow and box + prop (a spare?) for 200GBP
Don't know if this is of any interest, as it says standard, but you could then use stuff you have/do what you want, for much less than either of the other two.
It may be an old advert, but worth an email to find out.
Sparks
Edited 'cause I forgot to paste the URL, and also there is a 4AGE engine there for 275, if you fancy a change.

It looks like a case of you pays your money, you gets your choice. But more food for thought, try www.jasonlepleymotorsport.co.uk.They have an ex-rally x-flow for 650GBP which may intrest you. They are based in Mansfield.
Id go for the second one . . . .a farndon crank is 11-1200 squid new, even if its been ground once you'll get plenty of life from it.
the first one sounds a bit ott in places, and the spec has been glamourised (at least the way I read it) and its expensive
I bought an ex westie 234cammed 1700 crossflow with twin 40's in perfect order with rocket box and all ancilliaries, Ive done 15000 hard miles in it so far . . . .it cost me 350 . . .
