On my 993! The cam covers are leaking as well. Thought I'd share that with the 996 owners so they don't feel so hard done by. Just as I'm about to put the car up for sale too. Such is life.

Its a seal, it wears out.

Mine was done recently when the engine was out anyway - seal was £12.00, iirc.

Surely not two 993 RMS's on the same thread.... Next thing you know there'll be a rumour on the internet that they are unreliable yikes

Just had mine done, too. I was told that there was a slight leak, though there was no evidence on my garage floor, so it wasn't serious. However, given all the fuss about RMS problems on this forum, I decided that I might as well have it done whilst having some other work carried out, and it meant that the 12,000 mile service was cheaper with the engine out. So yes, 993 RMS need attention from time to time, too, though I gathered that a catastrophic failure is rare - more a question of avoiding a messy problem and keeping everything in good working order.

lets be fair here, its a seal, they need replacing on every other model car I know of, its only PH making a fuss.

who cares? its not the end of the world, replace it, enjoy the car, thats whats important.

Yip , a friend of mine had his 993 seal done last year too.

I hear comments from the 993 fold that 'it's only a seal , no terminal damage , just creates a mess, won't fail catastrophically etc' ... Dead right , that'll be just like the 996 seal so...scratchchin

In all honest though fair dues lads for being straight up about the seal failures .. I don't know if our 996 clique would admit it if one of their door straps went t1ts up!!

So that's four 993 RMSs we know of.....

This is how rumours start...

If this is turning into a air coolled coming out thread, neither my 964, nor 933 have been particularly reliable, in fact they are the least reliable cars I have ever owned.

My 944 and 968 in contrast have never put a foot wrong.

Still love the 911s though - I can forgive them anything

Well ..........................................................

It's good to know that the universal constants are still holding their own:

*E=MC2,

*Donkey's have big donger's (well the male one's do at any rate),

*Wiping your arse with a broken bottle is a mite dangerous,

*Porsches leak.

Personally , I couldn't give a toss whether 993's occasionally have leaky main seals .
.. Just like I don't give a toss that mine's a tad moist (Seal that is ,you dirtmongershehe) That's life in a porsche and I just love it.

Exactly, a mist of oil on your 911 rear end is akin to the fine glistening sheen of post coital perspiration on Beyonce Knowles butt cheeks......

An outstanding way of putting it!

Have they ever made an engine that doesn't drop oil? correction a flat six engine!

The seal also went on my 968, no big deal, just weeped a tiny amount, left it for ages until the engine had to come out, and did it then. The difference between the 993's /968's and the 996/boxsters is that a main seal does have a life span, and is designed to have contact with oil. Like all rubber it has a lifespan and that would be around 8-10 years useful life. After that more and more will fail. It was only multiple failures in cars not that old that started to raise eyebrows and cause concern with 996's and boxsters. A leaky seal is never going to cause huge problems, but I guess on a £50k car you would expect it to last a little longer. I also heard that the problems are not down to the seal itself, more to do with the intermediate shaft seal and possibly problems with crank tolerances. Not good news for poeple who have suffered depreciation on 996's but better news for those looking to pick one up secondhand.

Well I'm not worried about the RMS issue on a 993. I think it's probably true to say that it's just been a more common issue on 996's and is probably due to a different design. In fact I'm so not worried about the issue that I've just purchased James Brown's car (the guy that posted this particular occurrence)...which now has a new RMS and cam cover gaskets
