Hi, I was wondering if anyone else has had problems with the gearbox on their new 2003 360 F1. I took delivery of a car 3rd Jan, and have has no end of fun. Every 40 or so miles, the car would slip out of gear by itself, and flash 'N' in the gear number indicator, along with a warning tone and the low-transmissiong warning light (The transmission fluid levels were ok). The problem progressed to a point where it would stall the car. The garage, I think, were scratching their head to rectify, and it seems that Ferrari were unable/incapable of helping. I think we traced it to the new software in the ECU of the gearbox, and a retro-update of older software seems to have fixed the problem. It was interesting to note that swapping new ECU's from other new 360's seemed to exhibit the same erroneous behaviour. Am I alone in these issues, or has anyone else noticed? It should be noted that all my issues occurred whilst the car was in auto mode. Happy driving. Marcos.

P.S. Anyone else doing the Supercar Run? I'm signed up, but I may now take my lowly Boxster, as I think it's the only way I'll definitely get there. Sorry for the Blasphemy!

Marcos- there was some discussion about this same problem on FerrariChat, and there were several causes, from fluid leaking onto the friction disc to a worn clutch. www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/21/199253.html?1043960486

The record for an F1 clutch is, I think, 400 miles. Mind you, I think the owner was a bit of a knob.

I imagine Mr Knob is quite a popular man at his local servicing centre.

Hmmm. Not a worn clutch. I had them check this, because of some details I'd read about in a Ferrari forum. Besides the issue happened the first day I drove the car, so even if my driving style was potentially noblike, it would have been tricky. I think Ferrari are being tight-lipped about a major issue with their new software that cantrols the F1 gearbox, as the garage had little feedback from them, and as I mentioned, another Control unit from another new car that had arrived caused the same problem. I really think that the manual 360 would be a better choice until these potential problems have been resolved.

Having raced a fleet of 10 challenge and GT 360's, nearly all problems are of a simple nature...eventually.

Connections all over and earthing points especially. Some cars have "rivnuts" with a bolt for earth points, some have a welded in boss. The rivnut type are problematic.

Sensor connections etc etc....multitude and hard to locate.

The most common cause of all problems though.....make sure the car is left to idle and self learn after the battery has been disconnected or the isolator tuned off.

Start it up with no throttle pedal use, idle until water is over 50deg C, then stop and restart for 10 seconds each time for 3 times. This will put it back to a remembered setting and be friendly.

Lots of little quirks to learn too, far too many to write here!!

Manual gives trouble too! At least the F1 won't put you in 2nd when you want 4th.

But yeah, basically F1 is far from perfect. Will put manual on challenge and sequential on GT in near future!

Look forward to the extra engine rebuilds!

bertie, you have to put this into perspective. Phil is a top Ferrari mechanic and as such sees all the PROBLEMS Ferraris have just like I see all the network problems Cisco has.

As troubleshooters, we see the good and bad side of the techno show but human nature means we remember the bad more vividly

Phil, you blasphemer , hope to catch up with you next week at the GP, I'll be dropping in to see Carl and Ross if you are there ?

Hi Pal, not sure how fitting the older software cured the problem.. bit Strange..From experience it has always been the other way round....
I can only say get them to fit a new clutch, and new software.. Every thing should then be reset and hopefully the car should drive okay. My car had similar symptoms, but this was due to a worn clutch... consequently the software was upgraded and it performed beautifully for 6k miles then changing from 3 to 4th ....'N'.. popped up..
(guess it was time for a manual)
good luck...

I have an F1 gearbox on my yr 2000 360 and so far experienced no problems, although it did take a bit of getting used to - I suspect that many of the negative comments made are by reviewers who have not given themselves this adjustment time - simply got in and driven the car once and made their minds up.....having said this, I didn't go for it for any other reason that my size 12 1/2 feet can only work 2 pedals in the 360 footwell!

A friend of mine had a 2000 360 with F1 box , he had loads of problems with it and eventually Marenellos had to replace the complete gearbox system .luckily the car was still under warrenty as apparently the bill would have been £30k!!!
Still it was a superb car ...not suprised he had problems as he drove it hard ,we once had the speedo showing 199mph in 6th gear and the rev limiter cut in with 2 people in the car.

Why should the car have problems if driven hard?

It's a sports car, it has a rev limiter to protect the engine. The car should be able to take being driven hard, end of story.

I feel very sorry for anyone who achieves a lifetime ambition in buying a Ferrari and ends up with a lemon. I am appalled that Ferrari keeps letting people order these cars with the F1 transmission when clearly there is a problem with the system. They do the long term integrity of the marque no good whatsoever.
