The 998 is much more revvy than the 1275 which many people like. With a good head and cam, you can get some really respectable power out of the 998 - my brother ran a 12G295 head with a HIF38 carb and that was nicely quick. I've got the same but with a 266 cam built up and ready to go into a car - should produce somewhere in the low 70s bhp hopefully.
998's are under rated. You could get a ridiculous engine for very cheap BUT throwing an MG Metro engine (preferable a 12HD24) will make you realise what fast minis are about. I'd tune a 998 as I like them lots but got biggen by the giant engine bug.
Get an MG Metro engine for about £100 and then tune your 998, when you blow one up, swap them. I've got 2 engines on a rota. You CAN do it on quite a budget, you just have to be patient and not cut corners where important.

(Having said, I'd jump at the chance to build an 850 out of a 73.5mm bore)

ive got a nice gordan allen crank that would let that happen...
...not to sell unfortunatley!
There was on ebay a while ago which went for £75 in completed items. I was seeing what Gordon Allen items were in the dead section. A mate of a mate ran one with a Weslake head in a sprint/maguire thing and got about 120hp out of it and 4mpg!!!! It revved to something ridiculous.
So then why keep it????....

1275 engine for road use.... most definitely yes. The 998 unit even when sympathetically tuned to produce goad horsepower in a road mini will still feel a bit asthmatic next to a mild tuned 1275 due to a lack of torque. Torque is what accelerates a car - horsepower maintains top speed. So even if your 998 is giving a good 70bhp, its torque curve will be smaller and it won't have as much immeadiate response and pull. Do the same mods to a 1275cc unit as you would ahve to in order to coax 70bhp out of 998cc engine (costs are very similar)and you'll have a very rapid road mini indeed.......

Pound for pound I found a 1275 with stage one kit to be the best way to reasonable poke in the mini, nothing costly about it and buying a decent head for a 998cc would cost you more than a couple of complete 1275's. I have a 60k metro lump sitting waiting to be used but nothing to put it in at the moment.
ive got one of those nearly finished. i seriously doubt that without a big cash injection that it will be nothing more than a good road head. - i doubt the cams, springs and valves will be able to make the power or be reliable enough.
the money i have in it now will have paid for a decent 5 port, so im looking forward to at least having a back to back rolling road session with my two normal cars when its done.
mines the 8 valver rather than tht 16 valve version and there is a lot more work to make it fit than many of the 'experts' let on (or even know about!)

I came across this link which has a bit of info and some photos of the BMW conversion,

Jim Lyons has whacked a BMW head on his turbo mini, it's a bit poorly here but works.
