ok so i'm new to the world of buying 911s. i've got just shy of 20k to spend and have now driven 3.2's, 964s and a 993 all in that budget.

basically the 993 strikes me as the best for what i want but of course i'm struggling on budget.

i've seen an imported 993 for 19500, imported 2002. aside from the fact that it's got no history pre 02 and it has a replacement service book (so I'm not going to touch it anyway), it's had a L to RHD conversion done.

what's anyone thoughts on buying such beasts, assuming one popped up with a decent load of history?

Bargepole....

They are cheap enough to buy in RHD anyway and even good conversions rob originality and maybe even compromise the way the car drives.

as a new poster to PH, it's worth mentioning I also thought the guy at 911 heaven was very honest about the car and the way they do business so I would definately recommend talking to them about others of their cars. just not keen on the left to right hooker.

I've heard that some Porsches actually work better in LHD form, as they were designed that way. Not sure if the 993 is one of them, but it could be worth bearing in mind.

(As as aside, everyone thought that the original Mk1 Golf GTi had crap brakes ... it didn't, it had excellent brakes, but a crap LHD-to-RHD conversion linkage, as the brake servo was left in the passenger side footwell when they converted it. They were designed as LHD cars, and the boys who designed the RHD model were obviously just the trainees/YTS students/whatever. And were probably the same bunch who designed the Mk3 Golf, but that's another story.)

It has been said that the RHD position is uncomfortable due to the pedal layout being skewed to the left and the steering wheel also off centre to the chest by a couple of inches although I didn't find it a problem.

Have had both LHD and RHD 993 - both as comfy as the other in my experience.

They (nearly)are all sweetness and light and your best mate untill money has changed hands and you have a problem. It's a used car dealer you are talking about.

I would only accept a recommendation for a used car supplier / dealer from someone who has parted with cash and has owned teh car for several months.

I notice the pedal layout on my rhd 996 means my left foot is resting on the centre console alot of the time, no issue really apart from on long journeys (4+ hours) it gets a little tiresome.

might also have somthing to do with me being 6'2" lanky git.
