Hi, I am seriously considering a used 964 as a daily driver....prob approx 18 miles per day, with the occasional long distance trip... I will spend about 17k on this car from a reputable dealer.

Advice / comments please ...
Thanks

No probs.

Nothing earth shattering there.

If it was an RS or you were doing 180 miles a day, maybe a different answer. But the earth will still revolve with this one.

Only prob I can see is the distance travelled wont properly warm the engine up causing premature wear, but a great daily driver choice!

I reckon if you're looking at 5 or 6 thousand miles a year you should have no problems with a 964, so long as (at the risk of stating the blindingly obvious) you find one with a decent history. Mine has done 98k and was bought with the intention of being used 'occasionally'. However, it's so nice to drive and eminently practical that 'occasionally' has become 'every day'. The only thing that detracts from the experience is the tyre roar, which is noticeable, though this is pretty trivial when compared with the benefits - brilliant engine noise, good ride, tactile steering, envious glances from eurobox drivers.

18 miles a day? Not when you start taking the long way to work

Do it!

I ran one for two years, took it from c72000 to c89,000 miles. It was fantastic overall. Maintenance (clutch/flywheel) and tyres were costly but the experience made up for it. Granted, it was challenging in the winter due to poor ventilation / ac etc when it would frequently fog up inside but overall it was great. Factor in the smaller depreciation and higher maintenance costs and you probably get near the annual costs of a repmobile.

Good luck.

You can use a 964 everyday no probs. My usual formuala is to run a 911 and a big cheap automatic car alongside it. That way you have one to eat the miles you have to do and one to lap up the miles you want to do.

I end up using the 911 about half the time, rather than making it a weekend only car, which I think is to be avoided as weekends so often get filled up with other committments and it can soon turn into a 1500 mile a year car which is a disaster.

I did try running my 964 as an only car for 6 month. Not a problem but the two car solution is better in terms of really enjoying the 911 I think and probably cheaper if the second one is cheap on service, fuel etc+ its always useful to have a car you don't really care about

In an ideal world, if you have deep pockets and you're single (ie. don't need to use the back seats) then an aircooled 911 as a daily car is very do-able and great fun.

In the real world, having two cars as suggested above is more useful and by coincidence is exactly what I do.

(Forgot to mention, I drove a 3.2 carrera as a daily driver/ main car for 5 years.)

I was doing a daily communte 50 miles each way in my 964 for 4 months earlier this year. All types of roads, traffic & weather conditions.

Had the car serviced at the beginning of this period and it never missed a beat.

For 17k, thats at the high end of the standard 964 market (excluding Turbo/RS), so you should be able to pick up a nice example.

Enjoy!

I use my 964 as a daily driver with no problems. I do wonder if 9 miles each way might prove to be a problem for you though - these cars take a while to get properly warm, and you may end up at work without being able to stretch it's legs at all.

I often use my 944 for a 200-mile daily commute. No hassle at all. And it's done 250k.

Been there done that and decided to buy a £2k vectra to take over the commute...why, people driving like idiots in the morning so didnt want them to dent my 964, so kept the 964 clean and garaged and never washed the vectra....this was commute near london so v busy......BUT....964 is fine for daily commute in my view!....you'll enjoy it!

I'd say go for it, a cheap run around is probably more likely to break down and cost money anyway. Two months ago i bought a 964 and am trying to use it it as much as possible even for B&Q runs despite having a diesel Laguna which i'd rather it just sits on the grass verge and rot. I made the mistake a few years ago of having a pristine 911 Carrera 3.0 which sat in the garage not accumulating any stone chips ready for the next owner.

Buy one, drive it to death, suck up any maintenance bills.

good luck, regards Andy

Had a 3.2 used it everday no probs, its leaving them standing what causes the problems.

I have just (well 4weeks ago) bought a 1990 964 to use as an everyday car and I am loving it. Its a pleasure to do the 50 mile there and back and I have already clocked a 1000mile round trip to the I Of Wight and Devon. Serviced properly, warmed up properly any car should be better off for use rather than standing in the garage......my opinion of course.
