I've read loads of stuff about how cool these machines are.

However, they are US only and hence need to be imported and run on 110v and appear very expensive.

I also noted in Autocar this week (congratulations Paul thumbup) that Mr. Miracle is seen with Makita.

So, is the Porter essential or will a UK available polisher do the same job?
(I can get discount on Makita/Hilti/Festool etc., so would prefer to use one of those.)

Depends what you're trying to achieve. I have both a PC 7424 and a bog-standard multispeed rotary.

The PC is a bit of a pain, since you have to lug a transformer around, but it's random orbit, so swirls and holograms just aren't really an issue. For sorting minor blemishes in manufacturer's finish, it's a top piece of kit. I didn't think there were many (if any) other random orbit polishers on the market - if you need that function, the other brands you list may not provide a decent alternative.

That said, for glossing up a refinish that has just been denibbed with 2000 grit, I much prefer the rotary - but the warning always issued about rotaries is that they're really aggressive, and probably best left to the trade. Since I'm in the trade, and if I burn through a refinish, I can simply repeat it, that's not an issue for me.

I use the DeWalt 443 rather than the PC, as I couldnt be bothered with transformers etc. It does a good job

Thanks for the replies, I suspeted the advantages of the Porter was the dual action.

Just surprised there are no european DA polishers.

I guess I'll have to look into importing one from the US.........

I have both a Porter Cable and a Makita and I could not live with out either.

Porter is well worth it does not take that long to ship.

True and you get great service from them, but it is a rather expensive way of doing it. I recommend that you take a look at the Detailing World website, where they have explicit instructions on how to order the kit in the most cost effective manner.
