Engine 1-4 light on F355
Discussion
Hope somebody can advise. Test drove a F355 yesterday and the light on the dash which I think said "Engine 1-4" flashed on a couple of time whilst cornering right hand bends. I do not have a manual so could anybody tell me what this light indicates? I thought its probably low oil but oil level is good
Hi,
It could be the Cat warning light, A red light saying "slow down 1-4" this indicates the Cat Converter for cylinders 1 to 4 is overheating. Don't panic It is probably a false alarm, the sensor or wires could be broken or the control unit faulty. I had the same thing on my 456 GT, I swapped the control units over and the fault moved over to the other bank of cylinders, i.e faulty control unit.£180 for the part so it is worth swapping of checking it first. What side of the instruments was the light?, L or R it will indicate which bank of the engine was at fault. It's a starting point. Were you driving the car hard at the time ? It could also be an Orange light with "Check Engine 1-4" I think this is the engine management warning light which indicates a temporary ECU setting or fault with the ECU. If you are going to buy this car get a good Warranty, as it could be an Intermittant fault and a Pain to cure.

I wrote a bit about this fault on another thread called "Mystery engine problem on TR" or something....
But also, if you put poor quality fuel in these cars, the knock sensors can't always cope and can cause the check engine light to flash.
But, it could be a number of things...as always! (disclaimer!)

Most likely problem is the cats. 355 cats tend to give up rather quickly and break up from the inside, was there a rattling sound at idle?.
However it could be faulty sensors. There is a pre cat sensor and a post cat sensor which meaure emissions before and after exhaust gas flows through the cats. Out of these a faulty post cat lambda sensor is the one that is most likely to trigger the engine warning lights. If it is this the part isnt that expensive- £72.10 + VAT from Ferrari.
