944 Headlights Problem - Fuse?
Discussion
This problem is beginning to irritate me.
My 944 pop-ups constantly kill the relevant fuse. Intially my mechanice thought it may be the relay. We replaced that, but the car still blows the relevant 7.5 fuse.
I carry an extra packet of these with me now. The headlights usually go up with no problem but then don't come down again. I usually just replace the fuse and all is well for another few weeks. I replace the fuse about once a month depending on use.
Thing is, last ngiht, the lights would not come UP. This is a first. I changed the use as normal (the old one had split - I did check) but the lights still don't come up. I reckon the fuse went bust again.
Any suggestions? Should I use a highter current of fuse? What should the strength be for the one that controls the headlight pop ups. The rest of the electricals are fine.

Have you checked all the wiring around the units? As they are moving up and down there may be a chaffed bit of cable which is shorting out?
If the fuse fitted is the correct rating I wouldn't uprate it, it is a safety device and you don't want overheating wiring.

Thanks for this. I am a complete electrical numphty... Is the wiring fairly simply that I can take it to the local hack without fear?
I am an electrical disaster but luckily my Dad is a retired sparky and knows loads.
I would give Bert Gear at berlyn services a call. He knows 944s inside out and is very helpful. There may be something particular with these models that goes wrong.
I would try to do some more researching about the problem before taking it to a garage, as there is loads of info on the net.

Suggestions would be ...
1. Check that 7.5a is the correct fuse rating
2. Check that there is no binding or tighness in the mechanism to raise/lower the lights. (Bit hard to find without dismantling them, but do they move smoothly, does the motor sound 'laboured', do they ever jam?)
3. Good idea about chafed wiring. Worth a good poke around with a small torch and a couple of hours to spare.
Oli.
