Enjoyed a pax lap around Bedford Autodrome in Yex's car.
Stunning vehicle. The engine note is simply intoxicating...and it hangs on in a way that is simply sublime. Its noticably quicker than my 986S too - with a 35bhp advantage to 295bhp. I just wish Porsche would finally give the mid-engined two seater cars their head and supply them with the same powerplant as the 911 cars.
I can forsee the day when customers could be offered the "911" in two-seater, mid-engined configuration or four-seat, rear-engined configuration...at the same price.

It's horses for courses - the Cayman S is a great 2 seater, with sublime handling and which makes some great howls when you give it a good thrashing - I test drove it (for 1 hr) back to back with a Carrera S - The obvious verdict was: Cayman and Carrera are utterly different cars. My personal preference was for the 911 - as much as I enjoyed the Cayman, I just loved the 911 for its power, feel, build quality, sound & handling.
But IMO a better comparison is between the Cayman S and Z4M Coupe. The Coupe might save you another £10k or more, if you like it. It also highlights the massive strengths of the Cayman S more fairly than its big brother: build quality & handling, and the one possible weakness: the need for a bit more grunt.

I'm very happy with my Cayman, especially after playing with it at Bedford on Saturday
The car does everything I need: easy to drive in all traffic conditions, wife finds it easier to drive than her Cooper 'S' (not sure if that's a good thing
), can get two full sets of golf clubs in rear, amazing grip in corners when pushing on a bit, great acceleration in gear when I have the revs right, superb cabin and the sports seats are sublime, economical when not being pushed.....the list goes on but would certainly include the aural effect of the engine when at the higher reaches of the rev range
I will probably upgrade to a 911 in the next 12 months or so but this will probably be a GT3 of some description as I want to do more track days and am fortunate enough to have another vehicle for everyday use which would allow the "toy" to stay off the road unless I really wanted to take it out.
Any specific questions just ask,

I agree with the GT Purely Porsche magazine this month in its review of the Cayman 2.7; roughly speaking: "If you are considering the 2.7, beg steal or borrow the extra £3k to get the Boxster S. If you are considering the Cayman S buy a nearly new 911 instead"
I do think it is a nice car, I like the looks (well in black with 19" SDs, boring in silver IMHO) but it IS over-priced
Just my opinion and I agree with this also:

I've started to really like these, and at £25k less than a 997S, why shouldn't I just get one of these and not its big daddy?
Answers on a postcard, whose got one and what you think of 'em?

Same price as a good 996tt.......After you account for the likely depreciation / running costs of each would there be much difference between the two?

and I much prefer it to a 997!
although that is bizarre but hey-ho opinions are like a**eholes etc.....
Very true. I guess I should have qualified my comment better by saying it's the shape I prefer. I borrowed a 996 GT3 from my OPC a few years ago and it blew my mind (well, actually it scared me shitless ... in a good way)!!!!! I guess when I come to get my new car both Cayman and 997 will be in the pot and it will be interesting to see my view once driven!!!

When I was a kid I dreamed of owning a 911. I had posters on my walls and used to stare at every one in the street. I now have one (997C2S) in my driveway and you just can't put a price on realising a dream.
I've had a Cayman S as a courtesy a few times and it is a great car - I'm not your usual 911 driver who slags them off but for me it had to be a 911.
If the Cayman S is the one you want then buy it, drive it, love it..!!
Porsche - Long live the dream..!!

You are in exactly the same dilema as i found my self in six months ago. In the end I went for the Cayman S bacause the 'real world' difference in performance between the two cars is marginal, and i fancied the £25K in my pocket instead of Porsche's
The car is truly epic to drive
go and try one !

go and try one ! Hello, just joined this forum...
Ordered a Cayman S back in June, waiting for delivery, now getting itchy for it. Outstanding car to drive, I am finally trading up from an E46 328i coupe - the M3 seemed to passe!
Managed to keep it under 50k (difficult to do, with all the extras - you can't really buy just a factory base model can you?). Agonised between Silver and Black, but went for the Arctic Silver in the end - for aesthetics and practical reasons. Colour and lines almost reminiscent of a DB5.
But here's the question to all you Porsche owners... Zymol yes or no?

If you're able to consider a 997 money wise you won't find the posts about the cayman s being too expensive off putting (its only expensive in comparison to the Boxster)
I would have got one but for a change in financial and familial circumstances.
Still pine for one every time I see one (which is getting more often by the day)
Go on you won't be disappointed.

nope, that's still bizarre mate

OK...well when I say shape.......

I had considered a Cayman S last year but have recently come to a decision to go for a 996 TT for £55k. The Cayman S is way overpriced IMO, £50K+ with a few goodies added you could get a 996 GT3 Mk2 for that which is looking like a bargain.
One wonders how much the Cayman S will return in the 2nd hand market in a couple of years? For me, a 996 TT with DMS 500bhp upgrade for not much over £55k is a no-brainer.
