Within the space of 1 week I have had 1 idiot in an Escort try and run me off the road going round a roundabout (this really made me angry as I had my 2 youngs sons in the back of the car) and tonight some silly tart and her mates thought it would be a good idea to try and race me in the my X50. I saw her come steaming up the dual carriage way (restricted to 40mph) behind me in her Micra and decided to move out of the way, only to get a pair of middle finger salutes out of the windows from the occupants sitting on the passenger side seats.

On both occasions I have been minding my own business, what is it with these people? Has anyone else had this sort of respnse from people? After all it is probably my fault for doing well and wanting to own a nice car!

David.

Nope. 8 months driving a 996 turbo and apart from a numbskull crash braking as I gained on him through an A road corner not a dicky bird.

Very rarely, the most recent just before I sold the 964 was when I overtook a Ford Escort with 4 occupants who was doing about 40 on a NSL. He 'got me back' a minute later by overtaking me at a massive rate of knots when the speed limit was 40mph, over a pelican crossing.

I turned off the road and went a different way home instead.

This type of idiocy has been the only I have encountered.

David...

I too have encountered this sort of moronic behaviour recently. I was turning out of my drive, and midning my own business entirely, and the passenger on a Ford Focus driving past gave me a w4nker sign - for no reason. On another occasion, the driver of a Fiesta sped past as I was turning left, and I saw him give me a middle finger salute out of the window, again for no real reason.

It makes my blood boil, especially if you have had a bad day, but there have been lengthy discussions about the mentality of the 'have-nots' in Britain. They just cant stand the fact that you have worked hard, and are in such a tremendous car like a 996 TT X50. I personally, would love to be in one of those.

I just think, yes, you may think I am a w4nker, but at least I am a w4nker in a 997

Scum like that still wind me right up though!

Not had any bad reactions yet only boys shouting 'nice car mate', which is nice.

...the very first reaction i had after two minutes in a 3.2 was at a gas station from a British-Jamaican who directed the cars to the various petrol pumps "yeah man, nice one, nice motor. how does it moooove, my friend?" and he later waved me out of the station...

Perhaps it is just owners of Ford Escorts. When we had the last Boxster I had to drive down a road where there are always parked cars on the opposite side of the road and therefore people travelling up the road have to stop.

Unfortunately one sad b!stard in his old Ford Escort decided not to wait and force me off the road onto the pavement.

MarlonM, I totally agree about everything you have said and like you it does make my blood boil sometimes. Its another reason I don't like to leave the car parked too often in case some scum bag fancies a souvenier.

Came out of a nice pub today after lunch to see a Boxster missing its bonnet badge, and it had not been removed gently. Probably the closest the scum that took it will ever get to owning a Porsche.

Carl, my car is silver with the aerokit, it will make a nice change to get a wave from another Porsche owner as evryone I have passed so far has pretented not to see me. My number plate also gives away the fact my name is David if that helps. Were in Bournemouth are you based?

It is a digrace the way some people can behave just because of the car you drive. I remember when I had an M3, people were abusive and agressive towards me but strangely, when I had a Lotus, most people's reaction was positive - apart from a bunch of kids who tried to hit my car with a firecracker.

My advice like others is just to rise above it, you have a Porsche, they don't. When I get myself into a 996 TT later this month, if I encounter anything similar - I'll smile and give them the thumbs up - it pi$$es them off even more

Maybe because you were blocking the way when you could have kept left and that is why you got the finger?

Never had any insults thrown at me when I have been behaving in my car. Had millions of wanker signs thrown at me when I am not but I get those in any car

jjr1, no chance of me blocking them. I moved over after overtaking a car and it was well before they caught up with me as I saw them coming. Just as well I did as she cam past me so fast approaching a roundabout she nearly lost it and only just managed not to go over the roundabout.

I have had my Boxster S for 2 weeks now and it is my first Porsche. I too have experienced the 'Porsche effect' in full force and have found it can leave you with a sour taste in your mouth.

I have had boy racers right on my bumper, dirty looks at traffic lights and the other day I even had a bus driver wind his window down, as he was passing in the opposite direction while I sat at traffic lights, to shout something along the lines of 'WA**ER' at me! Unfortunately for him I got his registration and a good look at him and the Bus Company he works for is a small firm with about 4 buses. Not the wisest move. Still find returning to the car after parking in a public place quite a fretful moment....is that just me?

I dont even drive around with my roof down with heavy rap/dance music blaring out of the stereo AND my Boxster is only a 2001 model!

However, even after just 2 weeks of this I am used to it now and have accepted it as part of driving a kick ass car.

You guys are suffering some serious phobias or paranoia's. I drive in a city pretty much every day and don't get any hostility or strange looks etc etc. I just drive the car and it takes me from the one location to another just as a Micra would do.

I leave it some seriously dodgy areas and never look back at it. These places include the drug/prostitution areas and no one even bothers me or says two words. Its never been keyed and neither have I been spoken to in a threatening manner.

"never underestimate the amount of idiots there are in the world"

It's the righteousness and hypocrisy that astonishes me. I get "told of" by other drivers a few times a year and frankly sometimes I deserve it, everyone makes the odd error.

One such sticks out in my mind, a BMW 530d sitting in the fast lane of the motorway at 10 PM on a summer night at about 95 - 100 mph, very few cars around, I drove slowly up well behind him and waited for him to pull across in to the empty lanes he should have been driving in. I waited longer. I moved gently left a right in my lane so I'd be picked up in his rear view better ( I feel this is less aggressive than flashing lights ). Still no glimmer of awareness on his part. Then I quickly flashed lights not as a criticism but as a reminder and request for him to move, then I moved a tad closer, but still he sat there oblivious to me. Eventually I undertook leaving a whole lane between us and drove off into the night noting he was on the phone and flashing me like a wild thing for doing it too.

20 miles at the services he was parked up next to my car as I walked back, I thought "this will be interesting". He had a hell of a lot to say - the long and the short of it he felt my speed was too much at about 110, but agreed he undertook all the time and was speeding also at up to 100 + was on the phone. He was a particularly righteous character but there are others like him. What is it with these people, don’t they feel like hypocrites ? Perhaps they are just so self unaware they are even less aware of others ?

I think he was insecure and took my flashing as a insult to his motoring skills and just reacted to it rather than thinking he could do something about it.

P.S – Please no back comments on the speed or the inherent hypocrisy of my criticism of him, I am aware of them :-)
