I have just sent my 2 week old Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR lens off to Nikon for fixing due to it being soft. (thread last week)

I took it into KP Professional in Cambridge who are the local dealers and they said it would take 6 weeks to come back!!

They are also charging me for carriadge as I didn't buy it from them, which I guess is fair enough.

Does 6 weeks not seem a little long to you. How will I cope without my new toy!

I got my Canon 70-200 back within about 3 days, and it was fixed FOC despite it being an import from HK. Being a member of CPS helped though - does Nikon have a similar scheme?

Yep, I've got one of our 70-200's off at the moment - it's been gone 3 weeks and I'm not expecting it back soon. Hence why we have to have 2 of everything

KP are (IMHO) jokers.

Nikon is based in Kingston. I once took my camera there to be fixed (about 3 years ago). On the wall they had a list of qualifying "Pro" products, of which your lens will qualify, that they would fix within (I think) 24 hours. I had to collect my camera as I was in a super hurry, but you can post it to them, and get it back like that too. Otherwise, I would recommend Fixation too, I just had my canon 70-200 fixed there. It took a a couple of weeks, but came in under their original quote, and all the other times I have used them things have been much quicker than that. Also, I took a peek in their order book, and it is mostly made up of Calumet, Jessops etc, so I would not be suprised if your lens is going there anyway - so cut out the middleman!

Well its gone now. They said it would be between 3 and 6 weeks but not to hold my breath.

Still, at least when it comes home, it should be the pin-sharp lens I was hoping for.

You're expecting it to come back looking like this then?

Being serious though, did you not try for a refund / replacement? I've never had to send a lens in for calibration yet and i wouldn't be happy if a brand new lens had problems straight out of the box.

My mate brought it back from Hong Kong for me. It was £850 which is pretty good as it costs about 1400 here!

Did not think there would be any diffrerence in the quality, but I have been told that there is.

The UK and Europe and the US get the A1 stuff and all the A2 stuff gets sold in Aisa apparently. The A3 stuff gets sent back to be fixed.

Hopefully I'll get it back supersharpened up.

Hope its not long.

i had a canon 24-70 2.8l which was soft. they wanted to repair it. i refused as i couldn't do without it. i refused as unfit for the purpose it was sold. start making these noises about wanting a new replacement or your money back. it worked for me. it simply isn't good enough.

Hmm, I wonder if its gone on a low-priority list as it was bought outside this country yet they're having to fix it for you at their cost. Or perhaps they're waiting for budgetary approval/money transfer from Japan before going ahead with the work...

Got it back today! bounce

Its still rubbish! weeping

Really don't know what to do now..............................

Will have another play tomorrow. I think that my D70 is knackered as well as the lens! I have never got any superb results from the D70 that are really sharp and I have a few quality lenses.
