Lawks a mercy - another what car thread!!!
Discussion
only this time at least it's a bit specific.
I'd like to spend between 30 and 45k on a 911.
don't care whether 964/993/996, although I've never really liked the look of the 996 front end much....
I'm only going to do about 5-10k miles a year, but I don't want running costs to be heartstoppingly shocking... I can cope with them merely 'high'
I'd prefer something with low-ish depreciation...
Car will do a short trip to the station every now and again, occasional long trips to clients, occasional trips with wife, toddler and baby to see friends... I probably won't track it.
I'm not sure a bog standard Carrera 2 or 4 will have enough shove for me... any suggestions as to what I should be looking at?

965 Turbo II. £25-30k for a top condition example, modern enough to drive and with its milenium falcon turbo lag its altogether more exciting than the much smoother 933 with its TT's and the best part of 15k cheaper. Driven lightly for a couple of years it may go down to £20k but cant see the floor falling out of them
....how about my mint 996 which is in the classified section. Solid car and not abused so will give you plenty of trouble free driving esp as it comes with 12months officail porsche waranty, new rear tyres and discs/pads up front.

incidentally, were all the 993 turbos 4wd or are some of them 2wd?
All 4wd.
If you want a 2WD 993 turbo, you could buy a standard 993 Carrera, then send it to RUF for a BTR2 conversion - that would get you a narrow body, 2WD 993 turbo. I believe the BTR2 conversion is 30,000 Euros so if you buy very carefully it might just squeeze into your budget.
Alternatively you could supercharge a 993 carrera - job done.
ETA: Except for the 993 GT2 which was 2wd (but somewhat more expensive)

thanks - definitely worth considering.
The wife, toddler and baby part wipes out my top tip (an early 996 GT3) as it doesn't have any rear seats. I would also rule out the earlier cars on the grounds of interior space - the urchins may just about fit now, but not for long and it will not be comfortable back there. Like everyone here, I am of course biased - in my case as I cannot use a RHD air cooled car on account of the comedy driving position (if you are racing driver sized - not a problem. Over 6' with big feet : forget it, your knee joints will never forgive you). LHD works better for the older cars, but I prefer sitting on the appropriate side of the car for a daily driver in the UK.
From your requirements I think that what you are after is a late-ish 996 with the factory power kit (I think it is 345hp), though I am not sure what kind of money they go for. As for not liking the 996 front - I can relate to that (especially the pre-facelift cars), but I still love mine - it is small price to pay for everything else that the car brings...

I reccomend the 993tt, depreciation is low, thanks to various publications waxing lyrical about them. The M64/60 engine is as tough as old nails, seriously over engineered- the oil stays clean the whole year around, thanks to large capacity dry sumping and air cooling. The Gearbox is the G64- Posches own design and absoutely bomb proof- before the days when they weant over to Getrag for better business sense.
You can't compare the power unit to an early 996 naturally aspirated water cooled unit which had it's fair share of problems, despite the "forum mafia" defending it on these boards.
I'll disagree with what Disco said above in that I think the 993 RHD driving position is WORSE if you're "racing driver" sized (like I am) as the pedals are so offset to the left- and the seat is moved more forward- that the 'leg angle' is more extreme.
It only really gets bad on long journeys. This would be my main reason for me swapping to a LHD car, that and the fact I now live in Germany. However current exchange rates mean that I wouldn't neccessarily get a similar condition/spec car to mine out here.
The 993 Turbo was only available as 4 wheel drive, strictly speaking, the 993 GT2 is a 2 wheel drive "993 Turbo", but these fetch 6 figures.
Good luck!

It is, You should find loads right behind the pile of rocking horse poo and hens teeth

Hmmm, there is that I guess
. Even just the parts kit to retrofit it is nearly £5k from everyone's favourite Belgium supplier (and you wouldn't be fitting it yourself unless you are a Porsche mechanic). If you want to go hunting then you would be looking for the X51 Power Kit on the car, but while they are certainly out there, Adam is right - not easy to come by. Other than that there is the matter of the 996 Turbo - early examples now appearing on Autotrader at the very top end of your budget [there is a yellow one for £45k on less than 24k miles up there].
I am with DiscoColin and others - go for an early 996 TT... I test drove one a few weeks and thought it was AWESOMELY fast. I also put a 997 TT around Millbrook proving ground for a day a couple of weeks ago - and whilst it is obviously an improved car, the 996 TT felt fine to me (I am very much an amateur enthusiastic driver).
£50k (996) -v- £100k (997) is a big diff, hence I am questionning the wisdom of my 997 TT Dec build slot.
