Which mp3 player

Hi i thought id post this in here for slightly wider coverage

Im going to fit an mp3 player in my S,it doesnt have to have a cd player as well as I only play mp3 and listen to the radio so an ipod socket would be good enough.It really would help if its not a deep unit as its a bit cramped in the S

So which one do i get

I've had one of these units in my Griff for 2 years. Basically it's an all-in-one hard disk mp3 headunit. Doesn't take CDs, but you remove the hard disk cartridge and copy stuff onto it from your PC.

They don't make them anymore so it's a bit of a gamble for support etc, but I really like mine. Only downside is they are FM only, not AM - and the FM reception isn't as good as "better" headunits.

I've heard very good things about these units and at that price personally I think you'd be mad not to have it!

I think I'll be looking to change to one of these soon too!

Feck me I'd have been aswell to and jumped on one of the ships! The bloody air port had loads of extra flights on for the brits that were being evacuated but the normal flights were being delayed due to it all. Some places were a bit chaos but we still had the time of our lives! Breast holiday I've had yet.

Where you off to? somewhere nice? Can I suggest avoiding countries at war and any neighbouring ones too! Some cheap cruises out there at the mo'. You know how hard it is for a scotsman to knock back a bargin?

I have a sony xplod unit which I bought in Spain and unfortunately can't find in the UK
It's brothers are available here though and being a Sony the quality is good.
This for example
It has an AUX mini jack socket on the front so you can connect your MP3 player to it using a cable.

To be honest though, the MP3 playing capacity of a CD has made such a difference that I can get about 7 albums on a CD, so with a couple of CDs in the car I've far exceeded the capacity of my portable MP3 player anyway and rarely use it.

You don't say what head unit you have already, but if it is reasonably modern Pioneer there is a good chance you can use it as it is to drive the Pioneer iPod dock, which is about £60. It takes about 30 mins to fit under your dashboard. You can dock your iPod into the cable that comes out of it, use the head unit to search through playlists and albums, control the volume etc. and it will charge the iPod as well.

Fair enough - about time you treated yourself to something decent . If it hasn't got a blue IP-Bus connector you've got no chance. 8-track definitely won't cut it...

Just this minute finished installing one of these, and have to say the sound is excellent. Very impressed! I am now looking for an application to burn Atrac files as the compressions on these are a lot higher, the blurb mentions up to 1 / 20th file size.

I fitted the JVC-KDLHX551, which I got a year or so ago now, it's dropped in price loads and is still a great head unit. Also Mine scrolls TVR across whilst it's playing!!

If you're going for a standard headunit/iPod combo, I'd avoid the Pioneer iPod connector if I was you, as it's expensive for what it is, and the control afford by most head units is very poor. With your old head unit you've no reason to stay with Pioneer kit (I had to wire an ISO block onto my S3), so it'd be worth going for an Alpine head unit, as they offer far better control over the choice of track.

One other thing is I'd suggest trying other players than the ubiquitous Ipod mainly because there are better players out there for less money, the main problem I have with Ipods and now the Sony walkman is the painfully twee and cumbersome front -end you have to go through to burn tracks, transfer them to the player etc etc

My mP3 player, you just plug into the PC, drag stuff across in explorer and thats it

and the sound quality is better

and it plays films

The USB stick playing head unit I got for the old Golf had a 6" lead, so you didn't have to have the stick sticking out of the head unit.

In fact Pies, I've got that head unit sitting around in the garage if you want something a lot cheaper to do the job...

I've not got a tiv but I can highly recommend a pioneer set-up. It basically appears like a standard head unit but has a lead which you can connect to an mp3 player.
Have a look on flea-bay. They tend to go for about £130, which gives you a head unit and the adapter. Most will play mp3's from a cd too.
