TURBO CHARGING THE ROVER V8 ON A BUDGET
Discussion
Best way? Hmmmm.
Maybe twin turbos would be better, as theyd be smaller and faster spooling up than a single big one.
Do you wanna run carbs or injection?
How much boost do you want to run?
How much power are you looking to make?
Is the cr too high?
Do you need an intercooler to lower the charge temperatures?
Is the engine going to be rebulit or is it on its last legs?
All questions to consider before doing something like this.
Need more info, but nice idea!

A lot of people have turbocharged Rover V8's,
most noticably and successfully Janspeed.
Usually running twin turbos through intercoolers.
The internals are much stronger too, Volvo pistons I think and Rover V8 diesel crankshafts!!.
Cheapest way would be to find an old converted V8 and fitting it.

That twin turbo Griff is owned by a friend of my cousin's.
Apparently the fuel consumption is horrendous, something like 5mpg on the road and 4mpg on the track.
If he was doing it all over again, he reckons supercharging is the way to go, and I'd agree, cos at least a blower can sit in front of or on top of the engine.
The plumbing in the Griff for the turbos was very impressive though!

It may cost about £1k. You need 2 turbo's, perhaps TO4B's or t3's. They can be quite cheap if you look around. You could get away with one T04B and link the exhaust manifolds together under the engine to feed one turbo. You need a rising rate regulator (FSE), a 12-15psi fuel pump, a holley 390-600 double pumper carb and suitable inlet manifold. You also need a sealed plenum making to put on top of the carb. It will look like a pot with 2 inlets (if using 2 turbo's). On low boost, 5-7 psi you will be very happy. Any more boost will break stock slotted pistons. A Microdynamics EMS5 will help the ignition to retard. Oh, I can cast new exhaust manifolds or you can look for second hand Janspeed items with integral wastegates or you can try to weld flanges onto stock items. You will need an oil feed to the turbo/s and a T piece by the sender unit. You have to install an oil return into the sump. Have fun.
Heres some info. The car in question for the conversion is a tvr 4.0ltr H.C.Im ruling out supercharging as i have had this conversion done on two rangerovers in the past with the superchargers alone costing me £3,500.This was with out all the other mods that were needed.Ive also ruled out bigger capacity engines.A freind of mine runs a landrover export business,so i can obtain a 4.6 cross bolted engine brand new for £1,200.But if i want the 5.0ltr and this is where the price jumps my bill would be £5000 and if i want a race spec 5.2 then your talking £6500.I want more power on a budget and was thinking of using the Garrett T4 turbo fitted on the landrover diesal and i believe the lotus turbo esprit.I can obtain one of these second hand for less than a hundred pounds. The car in question has 40,000 miles on the clock with a full service history ans has always had mobil 1 oil in it.

I would have thought the simple solution is to sell the car and buy a 5 litre one. I seem to have an idea that the brakes are different on the bigger engined models as well, a 4 litre brake set up may well be inadequate for more power. I take the view that before increasing power you should increase stopping power and suspension.
I have a couple of turbos that I could do with selling if you are interested. They will give around 270bhp each (been replaced with ones that give more like 400bhp each!). They have only done 1 race since being rebuilt over christmas last year with new bearings. They are nothing fancy with plain bearings but they should be plenty good enough for your application.
