Hi, recently purchased a 996 , although then stereo is ok I was thinking about having the speakers changed. Not even sure how many there are in the car but can anyone recommend any good custom speakers. Will it make a big difference if I change the speakers and leave the stock stereo?

cheers

Does your car have the speakers in the doors or just on the dash?

The dash and behind the front doors (the passenger seats)

If there is no speakers in the bottom of the doors then you are never going to get it sounding great sadly. At a push you can squeeze a 4" midrange and tweeter into the dash pods, but running them off the standard head unit is not going to give you great results. To get a decent sound in a car you need good ouput across the full frequency range, but small speakers simply cannot produce the low frequency output at any meaningful level. If you change the speakers and add a small subwoofer of some sort then you'll be able to get it sounding OK.

Let me know if you need/want any more info!

Cheers

I've got custom door panels in mine, with speakers in. The previous owner spent £2k on the sound and phone system, but I never listen to it.

Seems Chris is your man.

Bit of In Car Entertainment advice ... if moving from a stock system, the most lacking thing is power. Really. Fit a small aftermarket amplifier to the system for the best, most cost-effective results. Next step is to add some kind of sub (if you can find the space), next is to improve the signal source (head unit.) New speakers should be pretty much last on your list of improvements.

My 944 has a small (but high-quality) amp and a decent head unit, as well as some Alpine speakers, but these were fitted only because I happened to have them. If I had to make only one improvement, it would be the amp. (Total cost for all the bits was less than £200, probably less than £150, and the improvement is huge.)

Have a search on here for 944 and speakers, and you will find a detailed post I put up about it, around a month ago.
