Having been driving around with a knakered synchro on 2nd for the last 6 months I have decided to fill in 1.5years worth of expenses to fund a new gearbox.

Having done some reading it appears that the LT77 box was replaced by the R380 box which is supposed to be a superior box.

Has anyone done this change ??? is it a direct swap of gear box or do other things have to be done ie retriming or structural modification?

The gear knob will need replacing as reverse is under 5th ..... do the 500 gear knobs fit on the precat gear sticks ??????????

By 'R380' do you mean the Borg Warner 'T5' as fitted to the later 500s?
If so, there's a few past threads on this. From memory it's do able, but requires a new bellhousing, propshaft and gearbox mounts. General consensus was that it's cheaper to rebuild the LT77. Although the LT77 can be notchy, it's up to the job in the precat and once loosened up I prefer it. Whilst the LT77 can have second gear synchro problems, the T5 can have problems with the bearings (or somehting) on 5th.

Get your LT77 to Competition Transmissions for a rebuild. They can strengthen it at the same time. At around £450 it is a lot cheaper and far less hassle than trying to fit a R380 box. BTW the R380 box still had its limitations.

Steve, do you if anyone can change the ratios on the Rover box, as I know the T5 is longer geared about 10% in gears 1-3.... ?

Nope, fairly sure it's a different box - happy to be corrected though.

Yes but it will be a close ratio straight cut set and will cost around £2000 ish. Whines like a dog being severly kicked... .

What's the torque rating on that now, Steve?
