I have just changed the water pump on my S2 which was on its way out. When i re-assembled it I put on a new fan belt. Upon start-up everything was fine apart from the voltmeter reading lower than normal, although still above 12v.

When i went to start then car today, i didn't get the battery warning light, and when it was running the voltmeter was showing about 11v(just on the top of the red line). I have not had the battery warning light on before it started or during the time it was running. The volmeter didn't rise as normal when it went to 2000rpm.

I therefore have a problem. If the alternator is knackered i would expect the battery warning light to come on to say the battery isn't being charged.

Any ideas?

Cancellation, I have solved it, or at least i hope so.

Played around with the wires coming off the alternator and it is now working fine. The voltmeter is reading stronger than ever. It guess i must have knocked a wire when i was working on it.
