How about ADAC? German, €78.00 and has a reciprocal agreement with the AA for UK cover.

When my UK cover runs out I'll be doing this, as they recover from the 'ring.

my german's not so good. heard there was a breakdown firm on the continent, but all the service was in german...

Well tom I can only go by my own experience. I went on to the continent with Cerbie, God bless her! while there she blew a clutch in an underground car park of all places.

Just a few hours before going away the wife nagged me to get AA five star, so just to shut her up I spent £58 with them and got covered. (Thank God)

When the clutch went, I phoned the AA and they sent out the ADAC in less than 20 minutes, the patrol man said what would you like us to do? Send it home in cotton wool I said.

So they sent in a special recovery unit to extract her, then loaded her on to a transporter. Great! but that is not then end of the story.

From that moment on I was assigned a personal Representative who took care of all my personal needs. I was on route to Italy from Holland, they phoned me every day for my transportation needs. That includes taxi's car rental (on both sides of the channel) Ferry boat back to blighty.

Yes all for £58 !!!!!!!!

Guess what, every time I take an exotic out there I always go for 5 star.

My Cerbera clutch went in Granada Spain ( hotel car park - convenient)

Green Flag wre outstanding, car repatriated, taxi to airport to collect hire car ( Pug 307 Ugh!) Hire car, taxi from hire car centre to ferry home and hire car from Portsmouth to home - all with really nice caring people on th ephone who really looked after you, rang you to check all was well and were really interested. When I organise tours now - as I occasionally do - I alwasy endorse Green Flag

Have to say the RAC really looked after me during a hiccup at Le Mans - recovery, 2 cabs & hotel all paid for & organised by them, and they even came up with a translator to translate instructions of how to bleed the cooling system from my dealer to the French mechanic! Also they had English-speaking staff which always helps!

Having used both the AA and the RAC for continental recoveries, the latter currently gets my vote (and money)after the AA fouled up big style on a breakdown about 4 yrs. ago. In addition, you generally get the choice of continuing your journey (if the car is unrepairable) with a hire car, or accompanying your car home. Having also done both, I would always recommend going with your own vehicle. If your decide to let it be recovered separately, it could take up to 2 weeks before it arrives, as the companies wait until they get a transporter full of broken Brit. cars before they send them home. In addition, there is also the risk of damage. In my case, the AA's foreign agents caused damage to my car when securing it to the transporter, requiring a front-end respray which I forced them to pay for. A further reason for staying with your car is the difficulty of actually getting it onto a recovery vehicle - low ground clearance and a lack of towing points do cause problems, and in my case the use of various lumps of wood is needed to raise the car!
