Or why not do an engine conversion....

I have a V8 840i engine in my E36 325i... it sounds rather

That way you keep the car, but get more power. It would cost at least 6k to turbo your engine, and you can get M3 engines for 1500 quid these days. And the V8 engines fit as I well know (just).

Domster,

Can you tell us more about the 840i V8 in your E36 - this sounds like a great idea, but I wouldn't know where to go to get a job like this done. Does the V8 engine bolt onto the 325i gearbox, or was the engine installed complete with gearbox. Also, Who did the conversion?

This is the information that Dom emailed me.... hope its helpful for u!!!!

Conversion was done by a company called Ultima Cars based near Cheltenham. Apparently it cost 11k in total, as it has Schnitzer bits on it as well, and an original M3 bodykit and wheels. Originally the car was a 325i coupe, approx 1994 model year, which had been converted with an M3 engine (E36 286bhp pre Vanos). Original owner just fancied a V8 in it...

It is a tight squeeze in the engine bay - it only just fits. That said, it works beautifully, just like a production BMW. The engine is mated to a 535i gearbox but the diff is quite low geared, feels like it is out of a 316! This gives it 'sprint' gearing, ie shit fuel consumption and noisy cruising, but it is quite nippy up to 130!

Cheers danny. The info there basically covers it.

There is still some slight cosmetic work to be done, mainly in the engine bay, but the conversion works perfectly. Could be a production BMW.

I took it out for a decent run yesterday, and it is M3 Evo quick from my memory of driving M3 Evos, with more grunt at lower revs but a lower top speed. I may consider changing the back axle ratio at some point as 1st is miles too short, and 5th revs out at about 135-137mph by my calculations. You can start off in second with all that torque, so bumping the ratios up the speed range wouldn't hurt too much.

The main thing is that it sounds fantastic - I mean, really fantastic - and it is quite different.

The guy at Ultimate Cars (a BMW specialist based near Cheltenham IIRC) to speak to is Keith, if you fancied one. To be honest, there are no whopping turbos etc to plumb in, so it looks realtively simple to do. I say relatively as I'm sure Keith had many a grazed knuckle fitting it all in.

I have heard that you can get the 840 engine supercharged to 550bhp, plus I could add more schnitzer bits to it and sort the gearing out - 200 mph E36 here you come, but I'm going to build an Ultima for serious performance and keep the BMW reliable and practical. Ish.

Cheers
Dom
