What work car?

Hi chaps.

Not really Noble topic but hopefully Ted won't mind me asking this group of petrol heads with similar tastes to me this question.


I drive a Chysler voyager for work and although its very useful for carring stuff and throwing mountain bikes in etc, its just boring and dull to live with everyday!

I want something more fun for my work car.

I have a shortlist of the following and would appreciate your views and any thoughts if you have experience of any of them.


Audi A4 Avant 3.0 Tdi Quattro Tiptronic

Audi A6 Avant 3.0 Tdi quattro Tiptronic

BMW 530d sport touring

BMW 535d sport Touring (more cash but is it worth it?)

Golf Gti DSG 5 door. (slightly more sensible on price?)


All cars would be big enough I guess, A6 being biggest and Golf smallest, but I could live with any.

I guess the golf would be cheapest at about £22k (inc nav and all the toys) 535d would push £40 for a 6 month old one.

My ideal everyday/carp fishing car is the A4 Avant 3.0TDI. I personaly when I change will only be able to afford the 2.5TDI.

If you are throwing bikes in it then the A6.

Bottom line get the Audi.

I've got a 530i Touring and it's a good car. BIG inside and great at eating the miles. 30+mpg on a run and that's not tooling about.

Chipped 530d then!

If you go Audi then suggest the A6 there ain't much room in an A4. Just sold my A6 which didn't actually leave me stranded but had a number of issues to sort.Also local dealer is useless.
BM looks a nicer car to me but decided on a 4x4 in the end which I can take shooting and maybe use to trailer the Noble to track days - or maybe not.
I always got so wound up about changing cars but now i think well its only for a couple of years so just get what you fancy and live it it. It ain't for ever !

I had the A4 estate for a while.

Very nice car to drive, and despite it's size it was very nimble and the fuel economy was excelent.

Rear room was good, although considering it was an estate, not as big as you'd expect.

I'd be inclinded to go for the A6.

(Diesel is the way ahead after all!)

My thoughs also until I was transported poste haste to Brussels airport in a BMW 530d sport thingy when late for a flight last week - absolutely amazing performance and no diesel clatter either!

Certainly a tough choice.

I think its between the A6 and 530d then.


Does anyone know (Stuart Jones if your listening) if the 535d is actually a chipped version of the 530 or if its a totally different engine and map etc?

The 535d has 2 turbos rather than the single on the 530d.

I have to agree with the last comment on your link and say that they have come a very long way since the early 530d of old.

I drove one the other day which is why I am now desparate to chop the ugly grandad car I drive everyday. It was a monster really! 35mpg (no really!) and 400 ft lb of torque twinned with 240 odd bhp is hardly a dull drive!

Plus, its likely to be better at "Wife finding duties" than the crumbly Voyager even with its chrome wing mirrors!

Must be an auto 'box! Otherwise that would be a great choice. Looked at the RS6 but its a bit much for 30k miles a year for work don't you think?

I use a A6 2.8 quattro estate as the daily drive.
It's a V reg.
Nobody gives it a second look.
I throw stuff in the back.
The steering is like poo.
My wife can't adjust the seats back and forth as they're too damn heavy so I have to "preset" them for her.

So why do I have one .. well nobody gives it a second look, including me as it's so utterly "dull".

If you want dullness and loading space then I can highly recommend the horrid thing.

Only 2 doors but massive boot and a gear box where you don't need to use your left leg?

CSL makes a better noise but not so comfortable

nope - RS6 is fine for 30K miles a year for work ...thats I what I use now ...its the bollox and you can pick up mint low milers for sub £40K ...discreet, v fast, practical, comfy...I guess the decision is on whether you have to pay for your own fuel ...if you do then get an A6 3.0TDI - avg on the RS is high teens...25mpg at a push on a gently motorway cruise.
