Speedometer & Odometer problem

Hi to all

Hopefully one of you had the same problem as well in the past. While driving suddenly the Speedometer & Odometer are temporary out of work (at all time, the rev counter is working properly). Meaning, no miles / kilometers are recorded and even no speed is shown – just zero – during a constant trip on the highway! This happens more often recently and the overall average is that those instruments are working half the time. There is no regularity which I was able to identify. It’s not depending on the gear and the use of other electrical functions like fan, lights, stereo and so on. Only in the morning the first couple of kilometers this never happens. So maybe temperature has an impact on the functionality of the instruments. We tried to renew the earthings - without success. Is there any helpful advice out there?

When I first got my S2 I had a sort of similar problem - Speedo and odometer wouldn't work when cold but slowly came to life about 15 miles into a journey. After checking the wiring I replaced the sender unit which is mounted on the gearbox. That solved the problem. I got the replacement sender from the local Ford dealer; the original item was discontinued but they provided a substitute (although you need to swap the cog from the old to the new and also the electrical connector is different)
