Considering a 996 Turbo
Discussion
Hi guys,
with the new 997 turbo coming the 996 is getting hammered on price and it''l get worse as more 997 turbo's are seen.
What are the pitfalls with this car. Does the engine blow up in the same way as other 996's? Whats the annual warranty cost?
I'm moving up from Boxsters any one else made this change?

Opinions are split on values... one school of thought says that they have already taken a large recent hit which has now slowed, meaning that values will hold strong (particularly on the older cars). These optimists (typically current 996 TT owners) also believe that the press attention surrounding the 997 TT will increase interest in the 996 TT - and that the buyers are very different groups of people as it's £50k-v-£100k. They also believe that these cars are so superb that they can't drop below £40k for a while - as has happened with the 993 TT (though these were made in FAR smaller volumes).
Opponents argue that the 997 TT will hammer the 996 TT and that a lot of current 996 TT owners have been waiting for the 997 TT and will be jumping into one as soon as they can get their hands on one (increasing 996 TT used supplies, damaging prices).
Early cars are now in the mid-40s - and whichever way you look at it the 996 TT is a sensational car. I test drove one a couple of months ago, having owned 997 C2Ss, M3, AMV8 etc., and was absolutely blown away. Brutally fast and composed - I HIGHLY recommend buying one (I have decided against as my dealer told me that my 997 TT is coming sooner than expected).
Warranty costs are comprehensive and consistent across all 911 models, regardless of value, age, mileage or model (though 7 years and 125k miles is the max) - which is refreshing in the face of BMW's M-series warranty hikes. OPC warranties are a must and cost just over £700, + the cost of an inspection if a warranty has been allowed to expire on the car.
Go for it!

There is really nothing to consider.
If you have the folding, relinquish it at once to the over oiled shark within the appropriate gin palace.
Then, be content that almost no car will match you in 99.72% of situations.
Only my illogical love (plus fiendish historical expenditure) for the 993tt profile keeps me au luddite in this matter.
Although, I saw a lapis 996tt example yesterday and did wonder about even that...

Buy one they are fantastic value & one of the fastest cars out there!
1/ Full service history 100% a must!
2/ Look for an enthusiast owner, some one who doesn't boot when cold & lets it tick over for a while when hot!
3/ spec hasn't changed greatly, but 02 onwards included some useful extra's as standard, e.g Bose, auto dim mirror & rain sensor etc & 04 my onwards had PCM as standard.
4/ For best re-sale try & get one with PCM, unless it's cheap enough!
5/ Remember that sports seats were a NCO but you then loose the full electric adjustment with memory, which is great!
6/ Never buy without a full check over & OPC warranty, they are VERY expensive if things go wrong engine wise!
warranty a no brainer for £750 & servicing a bargain for the performance!
7/ Generally very reliable, engine based on Gt1 block, don't suffer from RMS/liner problems of other 996's.
8/ fabulously fast, 2nd gear is addictive, but sure footed and comfortable on a long drive.
9/ main down side, too quiet, need sports exhaust & these are expensive as they include the cats, also too good, be carefull of your license!
Best of luck

Guys thanks for the responses. Its pretty much going to happen. If I can want to get a couple of months of sun with my boxster and then I'm into the turbo. I want midnight Blue as everyone seems to be in Silver. I guess its bite the bullit when the right spec / condition turns up.
Cant wait!

Silver has absolutely 'been done' - and your challenge will be finding the right car in your colour. I don't know what % of TTs were silver, but if you browse the classifieds it looks like >50%.
Get a different colour - silver's boring anyway... my last 997 C2S cab was silver and I regretted it the moment it was delivered!
IMHO TTs look gorgeous in Basalt, Atlas and Slate - and that wasn't an invitation for you lot to tell me, once again, how boring I am.

Sorry disagree, the reason there are so many silver Porkers is because the car looks fabulous in that colour, it also looks clean all the time. Atlas, Basalt & Slate, look dirty the second you drive them & show every small scratch swirl & stone chip. If you are a Zymol car cleaning type then dark is good, if not leave well alone.
But as always it's each to his own, so if you want yellow I won't complain!
I was in Reading on Friday, couldn't resist looking in at HQ. They have a GT Silver car in the showroom and that was awesome, it really suits the car; late cars only though.
Also saw a 997TT in Cobalt blue - drop dead gorgeous.
Red 996 TT stunning. My first boxster was red and I always liked red.

Also worth noting that when it came to selling my 997 C2S cab into the trade I struggled because it was silver - obviously dealers are going to find/make-up every fault they can to improve their bargaining position, but they all said that if it was Basalt or Seal they would pay a lot more for it. That's the first time that I have ever heard negative noises about silver in the trade.
