I’m about to start my hunt for an engine.
I’m on the look out for a LS2, LS6 or LS7 (if I can find one)
Are they Chevy or GM or is that the same?
I’m trying to find out what engines were fitted in what cars and over what years.

So far I have found out lots about the LS1 but not a lot about the others apart from the
LS2 is out of Pontiac GTO / Corvette 2005-2006

Can anyone point me in the right direction or help me out, what engines are fitted in what cars/years.

I'm also trying to find out what power output I could expect from a standard engine, as I understand it.
It goes LS1 350BHP, LS6 400BHP, LS2 400BHP, LS7 450BHP.

The ls7 is about 512 hp but you won't find a used one. You'll have to buy a crate item and then configure it to work with an aftermarket ecu/pcm. Either use a UK offerring or one of the products from the US, I'd use a UK ecu.

GM own chevrolet so yes there are basically the same.

If you buy a new complete engine then expect to ditch some of the parts and replace them in order to get it to fit your chassis. Guys on here will tell you what you need. You can give me a shout if you need any help.

I don't expect to find a LS7 but it would be nice.

Anothe question
I need the air input to be on the fly wheel side of the engine, can you just swap it round?

Yes the intake on the lsX engines can be flipped around. If you go ls1 try and get a camaro motor not a curvet. The vet oil pan will not fit and the throttle body is drive by wire. You can get the starter, adapter plate + clutch from www.kennedyeng.com/ You will need motor mount adapter plates to convert the sbc mounts to lsX, they are available from www.hotrodlane.cc/

I have found the new LS2 C6 Vette oil pan fits in the SBC chassis, and the same for the exhaust manifolds in the down-path configuration. Thr throttle body needs to be a cable operated type unless you fit the drive-by-wire throttle pedal too. The A/C compressor should be from a GTO setup as it has the ports on the side instead of the back end where they get close to the chassis tube. All my research says an alternator and bracket from a GTO will fit. The water pump should be a new LS2 version with the shorter pulley, and the inlet pipe will have to be trimmed shorter for firewall clearance. The wire harness needs to be customized, removing a bunch of unused stuff.
See wwww.ultimagtr.ca for details of my build up.

Gardner Douglas sell turnkey packages, with cats - sva compliant. They sell the LS7 also.

Seems a no-brainer to me, instead of fitting carbed chevy engines.

Sadly a new engine is not in the budget.

Thanks BigAl1 do you have any details of what needs to be Customized on the wiring harness. I’m planning on using the original ecu I’ll get a 3D ecu in time, but not until I’ve had the car going for a while.

I’ve email Gardner Douglas, but I am guessing he only sells new engines.

Your best bet then, would be a used camaro and t56 from ebay if you don't get something new or built up. Make sure it's described properly as some I've seen advertised over here have been misdescribed. You'll probably end up ditching the loom and buying a hot rod loom instead.

I reworked my 2002 Camaro engine harness to remove all unneeded circuits, and custom fit the lengths to the mid engine setup. Mainly I followed the info here www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=312119 for the wire pin-outs and the advice from others in this thread. My one mistake was removing the power wire for the injectors/coils, so this kept it from starting the first try. Once this was realized and fixed, started first turn!!
I bought HP Tuners software to turn off the VATS, and allow me to tune the car for initial running in, but a mail order tuner could do the same thing. I found it wasn't too hard to do the rework, just took a couple evenings and a Saturday to get it done and fitted.

Heck, that's some link! A loom is a few hundred dollars iirc, mind you wiring was never my bag!

Speartech will build a custom wiring harness swapping everything around for the mid engine configuration. They charge $750 for a custom harness.

Hi Chris I read this post, I’m way off headers at the moment.
But I will more than likely get a hand made system, as I am going to have to run cats.

I’ve just been reading this morning that some LS engines come with alloy blocks and some do not.
Now I am confused, I thought all LS engines were alloy.
What LS engines don’t have alloy blocks?

5.7, 6.0 (ls2) & 7.0 will be alloy. The none alloy items are fitted into trucks. Some 6.0 engines are iron block for truck use but you won't buy one of those

yeha i see where your coming form lol. these just looked good and are cheap, about $750 for the pair.

the trucks run iron blocks. all the bits are interchangeable and alot of the BIG bhp boys run them as they are stronger, but the ally blocks take over 1000bhp! lol

thanks Chris

Some trucks are using alloy blocks. The SSR and Trailblazer SS are alloy. I built the foundry equipment several years ago for the new GM 6.2 which is just now in the Escalade it's alloy as well.
We have ready to run packages and all needed items to fit the LS family of engines to the SBC Ultima chassis.
also used LS7's for $10,500, new for $13995.
Cheers,

Thanks Jeff I've emailed you.
There are not many SSR and Trailblazer SS in the UK, guess I'll have to ship one over from the USA.
Does anyone have any ideas on the costs?
I take it I have to pay import TAX does anyone know what the % is?
