oil cooler fan wiring
Discussion
Hi All- Can annybody help with regards wiring in a fan on the oil cooler. Basically I have bought an 8" fan which I intend mounting on the oil cooler to encourage a bit of fresh air into the rear. I want to wire this into the existing fan circuit so that it comes on automatically with the front fans and also via the fan overide switch. Looking at the wiring diagram if I make a connection on the cooling fan relay (87)and run this into the rear and onto the + fan connection and ground it locally all should work? Im just a little concerned about the additional load on the relay as I have already uprated the front fans to pacet 10" (10 Amps each)and this new fan will be a further 8 Amps. Does any body know if the existing relay/loom will support this?
High Steve and welcome (as this is your first post). You say that you are thinking of wireing the oil cooler fan to come on with the water radiator fans.I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that the oil needs to be a little hotter than the water and so an independant stat and control will be required for the oil cooling system?I have a similar arrangement on my GTW and it has an independant switch and relay. What stage are you at? I note that in your notes you had hoped to get your project on the road for April, how is it going, what motor are you useing ect.?
Steve - that's how I wired mine up on the GTR (if I remember rightly!).
I shouldn't worry about the temperature differential, but you can fit an oil stat if you like. To be honest, I'm not sure whether I got any real benefit with it, as the fan blows hot air (heated as it comes through the rad) into the engine bay, where it doesn't help the ambient temperature with the header heat etc.

Thanks GTWayne/Stig for the help, now I have the fan I think I will wire it in and see if it manages to push any air around. Yes managed to get the car on the road and have clocked up 1500 miles in the last month, even managed to get down to Goodwood on Sunday for the Super car Breakfast (black gtr reg V8 SLG). Im running a supercharged engine same as Stigs old GTR with a G50. To make it a bit different I got a stainless steel supercharger belt housing made and have glued in a toughened safety glass window so you can see the supercharger belt spinning from inside the cockpit, might have to buy a rear view mirror so I can look at it whilst on the move!!
I was at Goodwood on Sunday and saw your car but no sign of an owner. My attention was drawn mainly because my car is also black.Where did you get your motor from and have you had trouble free motoring so far?(the reg plate I have bought also bears some similarity; V8 GTW)

Careful Steve - that's Tuckshop territory!!
(don't worry if that makes no sense). In fact, I think it's my old engine that you've got in there isn't it?
Sunday was really good loads of great cars, I just arrived had a fry up after the long journey and spent all morning looking at the other cars. Its a shame I missed you, will be going to the factory open day although a long way off.
I bought the engine from the factory, it was the one sitting outside the office door for a while. No problems so far although I know the staff in the local Tescos filling station very well now!
Tuckshop territory-sorry you will have to explain?? But it is your old engine and it runs like new- no problems so far any way, should be due an oil change in approx 500 miles time.

Yup, that engine is good as gold. Glad you've got the car on the road and I hope I get a chance to meet up sometime to give the old girl my regards
NB. 'Tuckshop' built probably the most hideous, abomination of a GTR ever, in which he had a perspex covers that showed the front pulley through the bulkhead, lit with neons etc. The biggest laugh were a pair of woks (yes - woks!) that he used to prevent heat wash from the engine bay into a pair of huge speakers he had in the bulkhead. Why you'd use something that was specifically designed to CONDUCT heat, to insulate it is anyone's guess, but Tuckshop, well, he was kind of 'special'
Sadly (or gladly depending on your perspective), he wrote it off shortly after PASSING HIS DRIVING TEST!!! Yup, he couldn't actually drive when he built the car!

I can answer that one on Simon's behalf as it was the .383 from my old GTR (sadly departed). The engine originally came from American Speed.

What happened to the GTR? Did I miss something here? I remember you sold it but have not heard much since. Was it wrecked???? If so, that sucks. At least the motor lives on!!
I covered it a while back, but needless to say didn't want to make a big thing about it. The guy who bought it from me killed it
In a way, I'm glad it's not on the road anymore - I'd be too jealous if I saw it again!
I've wired my fan to come on with the rad fans and blow OUT the sidepod grill. Logic being that it gets most hot under the clip when stationary... so why not blow out. When moving not that convinced much air comes in from the side anyway, why would it ? My a/c fan is pulling air in from the other side so it's a healthy cross-flow of air.
Anyway it's effective (now I've reversed the prop) and if you fancy it, you can get a hot leg by standing next to the car ! Means the heat haze out the air intake disappears after a 10-20 seconds too so definitely works. These fans are rated at ~200L airflow/minute so not surprised.
cheers
Roger

I've generally found that it's the simple solutions that work the best! Good idea that.
