AA Breakdown repair cover

I,ve just renued my AA membership and noticed that they do a Breakdown repair cover for £65. It covers for repairs upto £500 and allows for 5 claims per year. I'm sure Iv'e read some comments on here before but can anyone who has it/used it advise if it's worth getting. I bought my car privatley and have never bothered with a warranty, this seems like a cheap alternative admittidley for very limited cover but it would help in the event of a failure.

I would welcome any comments.

They paid out for a starter motor no problems... that was the old version of the cover, but I cannot see any reason why there would be a problem (although I haven't seen the t&c's of the new cover).

Loads of us have this. All you really need to know is that it is breakdown cover only, it has to be away from your home, and the AA must be called under the normal roadside repair system in order to trigger things. The T&C's are available on request to members and those will explain what is and what isn't covered. They have suffered from people 'engineering' failures to occur at the right time so that claims would be paid for failures that in truth didn't qualify. This fraudulent activity has resulted in very tight rules and cases will be scrutinized if they think you're trying it on. As an honest inexpensive cover I think it can't be bettered.

I've got it and it's come in useful a few times.

You can also use it from home (I have home start..).

Well worth the money.

So do I but after a conversation with the AA I'm no longer sure. The T&C's changed a month ago and I think this option was dropped.

i recently claimed on mine, the AA were great, paid back 475 (minus the excess) and i covered the rest - it was clutch that failed.

I recently used the service for a slave cylinder. The process was completely uncomplicated and hassle free. The bill for the work was sorted out between the garage and the AA.

I would recommend this cover to anyone.

I was with the AA for 8 years, had a crash 5 years ago and towed me 200 miles no sweat, had a crash in my work horse on ice last feb and they would only tow me up to 15 miles to the nearest garage despite me being only 25 miles from home, checked witht the RAC and they still recover you from an accident to anywhere in the country like the AA USED to. So I'm with the RAC now, they even let you build up a "no claims discount"

I have looked this up on their Website. Your car must be less than 10 yrs old and done less than 100,000 miles. So no good for anything earlier than 96.

I have taken out the breakdown cover I think it's well worth the £65. Iv'e had my Tuscan a year now and have done 5000 miles with no problems but If something does happen Clutch/starter motor etc its comforting to know that I will get some support towards the cost. But here's hoping I'll have another year of trouble free motoring.

It used to be 3 claims per year IIRC. I've got the cover but haven't had to use it as yet but it's money well spent for peace of mind.

The basic AA service is roadside repair or tow to nearest garage.
You have to pay extra for the "relay" cover that will take you home or to your onward destination.
They also do a kind of NCD, in that they give you free home start cover after a while if you don't bother them too much...
